1. Sample Passage 1
Our extended family of Grasshoppers once lived harmoniously amidst the lush greenery, alongside countless other insects. We dwelled atop the tall, verdant grass, swaying gently in the breeze. However, tranquility shattered with the arrival of Mr. Cricket. Despite his robust physique attained through moderation in diet and exercise, he exuded arrogance and conceit. Unlike our amicable relatives, Mr. Cricket often relied on his strength to bully us. He berated us for daring to nibble the grass near his burrow, forcing us to flee far away to feed and avoid lifting our heads when he passed by. Worse still, Mr. Cricket viciously kicked poor Mr. Ant with his sturdy legs. Despicable! While the neighborhood remained silent, he reveled in his perceived superiority. Yet, being fellow villagers, everyone respected but feared him not!

2. Write a narrative recounting an event from the excerpt of 'Life's First Lesson', narrated through the perspective of a self-selected character - Sample Passage 2
After a heavy rain, water flooded all the ponds and lakes. I followed my friends, the Ducks, Cranes, Herons,... to this area to find food. The entire sky was filled with the color of water, adorned with countless shades of white, brown, black,... of the animals gathered here in search of prey. One day, as I finished eating and was standing preening my wings, I suddenly heard a voice full of sarcasm:
'Here, Crane, Duck, and Goose,
The trio plump, each plucking feathers from one another,
Pluck the feathers of Goose for me,
I'll cook, I'll grill, I'll stir-fry, I'll eat.'
How infuriating! I haven't done anything to anyone, yet someone dares to provoke me. I notice there's a cricket's den nearby, and I vaguely guess that I'm being teased by some cricket. Seeing this, I inquire: 'Who's messing with me?' but no one answers. Suddenly, I spot a small cricket fumbling in front of the den, probably the one who teased me earlier. Thinking so, I pounce on its den a few times to vent my anger and then fly away.
3. Write a narrative recounting an event from the excerpt of 'Life's First Lesson', narrated through the perspective of a self-selected character - Sample Passage 3
I am Cricket - a feeble, sickly insect. Next to my den is the lair of Mr. Grasshopper. Unlike me, frail and ailing all year round, Mr. Grasshopper is a robust young man with shiny, muscular legs, long antennae, gracefully curved, and a coat of glossy brown. Mr. Grasshopper's den is deep and intricate inside. However, contrary to his appearance, Mr. Grasshopper's personality is vile, arrogant, and extremely conceited. One day, he criticized my careless and disorderly way of living, saying it's a sure way to meet my demise. So, I proposed to Mr. Grasshopper to dig a connecting tunnel to his house. Unexpectedly, before I finished speaking, Mr. Grasshopper retorted: 'Huh, planning to connect a tunnel to my house? Sounds easy, right? Forget about that absurd idea. Digging is for peasants.' I thought the spirit of the village would be one of mutual support and care, but it turns out Mr. Grasshopper is just another selfish individual!
4. Write a narrative recounting an event from the excerpt of 'Life's First Lesson', narrated through the perspective of a self-selected character - Sample Passage 4
After Mrs. Goose flew away, I cautiously emerged from my den. Upon seeing me, Mr. Cricket burst into tears! I rushed back to him, but it was too late; he lay lifeless amidst the demolished den. I felt immense regret as I was the one who caused this tragedy. Surprisingly, Mr. Cricket didn't blame me; he simply uttered, 'I'm too weak and sickly, death is inevitable. But before I close my eyes, let me advise you: a life of aggression and recklessness, lacking thought, will eventually bring misfortune upon oneself.' I watched in anguish as Mr. Cricket departed. I embraced him, carried him to a tall patch of lush green grass, and laid him to rest there. I stood there silently for a long time. Since that day, Mr. Cricket taught me a lesson I will remember for a lifetime.
5. Write a narrative recounting an event from the excerpt of 'Life's First Lesson', narrated through the perspective of a self-selected character - Sample Passage 5
I am a slender, scraggly Heron, often wandering to vast waters with my companions to seek food. The entire expanse is flooded with white water, bordered by tall, lush green grass. One afternoon, as I was diligently searching for food, I suddenly heard Mrs. Goose angrily exclaiming, 'Who dared to mess with me?' Thinking it was a minor incident, I was surprised to witness Mrs. Goose repeatedly attacking a small cricket's den. The cries of the crickets echoed painfully, then Mrs. Goose flew away. It was then I realized that the cricket had teased Mrs. Goose, and she responded with immense pain.
