1. Picture a contemporary rivalry between Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh amidst excavators, bulldozers, reinforced concrete, etc., sample #1:
To win the heart of the beautiful Princess Mi Nuong, daughter of the king of Van Lang, both Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh arrived to propose to her. After a fierce confrontation, victory belonged to the worthy. Son Tinh, a talented individual with a majestic appearance, emerged victorious over Thuy Tinh.
Upon hearing that Son Tinh had taken Mi Nuong back to Mount Tan Vien in a helicopter, Thuy Tinh immediately mobilized his disciples, prepared troops under the Water Palace, equipped with meticulously crafted weapons. Simultaneously, Thuy Tinh posted challenges to Son Tinh on various social media platforms, summoning storms and tempests, shaking the heavens and the earth.
Receiving the news promptly from the divine messenger, Son Tinh at Mount Tan Vien also prepared a well-coordinated and fully equipped force. To ensure the safety of the people, the Mountain Deity mobilized all excavators and cranes to build embankments to prevent floods. The deity had previously implemented preventive measures, so the people could build sturdy and resilient embankments. The embankments made of reinforced concrete were constructed solidly by Son Tinh. At this moment, the Sea Deity summoned storms and floods, rapidly advancing towards Phong Chau along with thousands of soldiers and ships.
However, Son Tinh utilized excavators and bulldozers to sweep away rows of soldiers. The battle was evenly matched in strength and strategy, with neither side able to assert their dominance. Intense and fierce as it was, ultimately the Water Deity had to concede defeat to the Mountain Deity. The story not only narrates the marital battle of the two deities but also portrays the aspiration to conquer, to master nature of our people. The Mountain Deity represents peace, calm waves, and the strength and intelligence of the laborers. The folk author implied victory towards Son Tinh from the beginning of the work.
The king of Văn Lang had a breathtakingly beautiful daughter. Both Sơn Tinh and Thuỷ Tinh came to propose, and victory belonged to Sơn Tinh.
Just the thought of Sơn Tinh taking Mị Nương back to Tản Viên Mountain in a helicopter enraged Thuỷ Tinh. The Water Deity immediately summoned a mobile phone, called for the turtle general, and ordered the general to summon troops under the Water Palace, along with warships and submarines equipped with torpedoes. Then, Thuỷ Tinh used various mass media platforms to challenge Sơn Tinh. The deity summoned rain and wind, creating a massive storm advancing inland. As the water surged and the wind howled, the deity hurried back to the mansion on Cát Bà Island to strategize the victory over Sơn Tinh.
Thuỷ Tinh's taunts quickly reached Sơn Tinh's ears. The Mountain Deity was furious but also concerned for the people's safety during the storm. Immediately, on television and in newspapers, warnings about the storm were broadcast, advising everyone not to venture out to sea at this time. The deity and the people tirelessly reinforced the embankments against the wind and rain. Fortunately, anticipating the storm, Sơn Tinh had previously instructed workers to use excavators and bulldozers to build sturdy embankments. Now, most of these embankments were made of reinforced concrete, capable of withstanding Thuỷ Tinh's raging waves. Sơn Tinh had substantial stakes in real estate companies, while Thuỷ Tinh owned the majority of shares in aquaculture and maritime companies. Everyone thought this showdown would be evenly matched. The storm made landfall in Phong Châu - signaling Thuỷ Tinh's attack. Countless submarines transported soldiers to land, wreaking havoc on the people's homes and farmland. Phong Châu was submerged in water. But no one expected Sơn Tinh to have numerous amphibious vehicles such as warships, water scooters, etc., along with excavators, bulldozers, tanks,... claiming countless lives of Thuỷ Tinh's soldiers. However, among the water troops, there were many deadly remote-controlled robots. Sơn Tinh guessed that the control center must be at sea, so he sent warships and water scooters to search. The Mountain Deity's guess was correct; the command center was indeed among the distant battleships at sea. The battle was fierce. Sơn Tinh's warships were struck by Thuỷ Tinh's submarines' torpedoes. But the Water Deity could not anticipate that Sơn Tinh would have B52 bombers drop bombs on the command center. The robots were paralyzed, and the fierce waves were held back by the embankments.
Thuỷ Tinh failed utterly. All the strategies dissolved into thin air. Sơn Tinh triumphed gloriously, returning with the admiration of the people.
The colossal failure left Thuỷ Tinh seemingly unable to recover. But the deep-seated grudge persists, as every year the Water Deity exerts all efforts to flood Sơn Tinh, yet each time ends in defeat.
Do you believe this story to be true or not? As for me, I can guarantee this story is one hundred thousand percent real.
3. Imagine the showdown between Sơn Tinh and Thuỷ Tinh in today's world with excavators, bulldozers, concrete, and steel..., Sample 3:
Sơn Tinh was attending a meeting to hear reports about the consequences and damages caused by the flood when an urgent message arrived: 'Report to Lord Sơn, a section of the vulnerable dyke has burst, requesting immediate return.' And so, the flood surged forth once more, the waters of Thuỷ Tinh. The determination of Thuỷ Tinh to cause flooding and the unwavering resolve of Sơn Tinh to protect the people from flood damage sparked a battle. Over millennia of development, today they contend with each other using excavators, bulldozers, concrete, steel, helicopters, mobile phones...
Upon hearing the news, Sơn Tinh hastily directed the helicopter to the site of the incident. Sitting aboard the aircraft, he witnessed the vulnerable dyke ruptured, with debris floating aimlessly on the water, causing him great sorrow. And amidst that flowing water, Thuỷ Tinh was commanding the flooding that completely breached the dyke. Sơn Tinh ordered the helicopter to land. Using his mobile phone, Sơn Tinh called the commander of the fleet responsible for the rescue mission. Sơn Tinh said:
- Fleet one, do you copy? Have you rescued all the people from the areas the flood has passed through?
The commanding officer hesitated:
- Yes, sir, the flood is too strong, our boats cannot reach, but we are doing our best.
Worry etched on Sơn Tinh's face. Thuỷ Tinh stood on a water scooter, ready to battle Sơn Tinh amidst the flood. Standing amidst the deluge, Thuỷ Tinh arrogantly declared:
- Sơn Tinh, this time you will taste defeat. With my mighty army, I will submerge this entire place in water, and I will have Mị Nương.
Thuỷ Tinh's words did not diminish Sơn Tinh's resolve. Sơn Tinh ordered excavators and bulldozers to bring sandbags to block the flood.
Thousands of sandbags were brought forth. Thousands of people were stacking sandbags to repair the breached dyke. But unexpectedly, just when it seemed the flood was halted, Thuỷ Tinh redirected all forces to attack the weakest part of the dyke. Perhaps those sandbags were not a significant obstacle for Thuỷ Tinh; the dyke broke again. Laughter echoed from Thuỷ Tinh's army as water poured into the residential area behind the dyke. Belongings, household items floated on the water's surface. Dead chickens, dogs drifted downstream. It was well past noon, yet Sơn Tinh couldn't swallow a grain of rice. The suffering of the people and the arrogant face of the Water Deity pierced Sơn Tinh's heart like daggers. A report came in from the rescue team:
Your Excellency, we've used boats, kayaks to rescue many people, but some are still trapped on rooftops, they're starving.
Upon hearing this, Sơn Tinh immediately dispatched a jet aircraft carrying food supplies, medicine to alleviate hunger and prevent disease outbreaks.
The floodwaters rise higher each day. The wind howls, the rain pours, trees bend, many ancient trees have fallen, roads are submerged, many residential areas are isolated. A day passes with no change in sight. Sơn Tinh stayed up all night to assess the situation as the flood rose rapidly. Early the next morning, along with Sơn Tinh, top government officials dealt with the flood, each hoping for its swift retreat for the people's peace. Sơn Tinh ordered additional water pumps to drain water from the breached dyke into the Red River and the Nhue River. Trucks carrying concrete and steel were deployed. Taking advantage of Thuỷ Tinh's celebratory feast, Sơn Tinh ordered troops to swiftly repair the breached dyke. Caught up in premature jubilation, thinking Sơn Tinh had conceded defeat, Thuỷ Tinh indulged in excess, drunk and unaware. When Thuỷ Tinh woke up and checked, the breached dyke had already diverted the floodwaters, many pumping stations operated day and night along multiple rivers, people's lives were returning to normalcy. All of Thuỷ Tinh's anger focused on the failed attack on the new breached dyke, but to no avail. Once again, Thuỷ Tinh spiraled into disappointment. This must be Thuỷ Tinh's most bitter defeat, thinking victory was certain but facing defeat. People joyously embraced Sơn Tinh, whether in ancient times or today with modern tools, the one defeated remains Thuỷ Tinh.
So, this year's storm season has passed, and the people are once again living peacefully. With scientific and technological machinery, Sơn Tinh emerges victorious once again. I hope that next year, and for many years to come, Thuỷ Tinh will not resort to flooding to attack Sơn Tinh, sparing the people from suffering, though Sơn Tinh remains a hero in any era.
