Located in the heart of Khom 4, Ward 8, Trà Vinh City, Trà Vinh Province, Vietnam, Ang Pagoda sits approximately 5 km away from the city center. It resides within the scenic surroundings of Ba Om Pond, facing the Khmer Cultural Museum of the province.
The History of Ang Pagoda
Ang Pagoda, also known as Angkorajaborey Pagoda, is hailed as the oldest pagoda in the Khmer pagoda system in Trà Vinh, constructed over 10 centuries ago.
According to the Historical Monument Panel of Ang Pagoda, the pagoda dates back to 990 and underwent its first renovation in 1965, albeit with bamboo and leaves. In 1842, it was reconstructed with precious wood (ironwood, dipterocarpus alatus, and 60 timber columns), tiled roofs, and brick walls. It underwent several more renovations until it attained its present grandeur and solemnity.

On August 25, 1994, Ang Pagoda in Trà Vinh was honored to be recognized as a National Cultural and Historical Monument. By 2011, the pagoda underwent renovation and restoration of structures such as the Main Hall, Sala, Monks' Quarters, library, and internal pathways within the temple grounds, focusing on preserving ancient architecture.
The Architecture of Ang Pagoda
Famous in Trà Vinh, Ang Pagoda is situated within a vast compound covering approximately 4 hectares, surrounded by deep water moats. Symbolizing the spiritual activities of the people of Trà Vinh, this Trà Vinh tourist destination is constructed in the architectural and decorative style of Southern Khmer temples.

The temple gate is constructed with three towers on top, adorned with carvings. On either side of the gate pillars are images of female Kẽn naarr dancers and bird-headed figures (photo collection)
Upon observing the structure of Ang Pagoda closely, one can see that all the roof ridges are adorned with stylized dragon motifs, with heads lowered, bodies following the roof slope, and scales curling upwards. These architectural elements are all inherited from the rich Khmer culture of the Southern people in their religious life.

Inside the main hall of Ang Pagoda, the only deity worshipped is Lord Buddha, like many other temples in the Khmer Theravada Buddhist tradition. The altar for Buddha spans nearly 30 square meters, with the main Buddha statue standing at 2.1 meters tall. Surrounding it are around 50 smaller Buddha statues sculpted from stone or wood.
Besides admiring the architecture, visitors also delight in viewing paintings depicting the life of Lord Buddha.

The main hall ceiling is adorned with four large murals depicting the themes of the birth, enlightenment, attainment of Nirvana, and entering into Nirvana of Lord Buddha
Throughout its historical phases, Ang Pagoda still preserves many valuable ancient artifacts, especially the Buddhist scriptures written on palm leaves. The temple grounds leave a strong impression with various construction items such as courtyards, lecture halls, Monks' Quarters, Sala, and stupas containing the relics of the abbots. These structures truly embody the beauty of labor and culture of the locals.
True to its reputation as the most renowned temple in Trà Vinh, artistic masterpieces like deity statues, celestial maidens, carvings, divine birds, and stories about Lord Buddha's life are invested in both quality and quantity.
