Cherry blossoms, also known as Sakura, have long been cherished globally. Symbolizing renewal, vitality, and beauty, thousands of tourists visit Japan every spring to witness the enchanting display of pink and white blossoms.
Local families in Japan eagerly anticipate this time as well. Many residents joyfully participate in lively spring festivals or simply indulge in Hanami – the most renowned traditional cherry blossom viewing festival in Japan, a grand celebration with a history spanning thousands of years, considered a national event.
If you're planning a trip to see the cherry blossoms in Japan in 2018, it's crucial to note the specific time and ideal locations for cherry blossom viewing. Various locations offer unique features – some boast the oldest cherry trees, others have the highest concentration of blossoms, and some are conveniently located near historical sites or popular attractions. With a Japan Rail Pass in hand, you can easily and swiftly move between multiple locations using the Japanese rail network.
Once you've decided to witness the cherry blossoms in Japan (or specifically in Tokyo), it's essential to attend the Hanami celebration at the right time and place because cherry blossoms don't bloom simultaneously throughout the entire Land of the Rising Sun.

When does the cherry blossom season begin in Japan?
The timing of cherry blossoms varies across regions due to geographical influences. Warmer areas initiate the blossom season earlier than others, typically starting from the south and gradually progressing north. For instance, Okinawa is always the first to witness cherry blossoms. Weather elements such as wind, rain, and temperature also impact early or late blooming, potentially extending or shortening the blossom season.
The cherry blossom season in Japan typically starts in late March and early April. Some areas may see blossoms as early as January. The first appearance of blossoms, known as kaika, signals the imminent arrival of the cherry blossom season. The peak bloom, or mankai, usually occurs a week after the first blossoms appear. The blossom season can extend until May in northern regions during late spring in certain years.
Cherry Blossom Forecast for 2018 by Region
The blossom viewing dates are forecasted based on data collected in previous years, especially from the recent years 2016 and 2017, conducted by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The Sakura season in 2018 is expected to commence slightly earlier in central and southern Japan.
The best time for cherry blossom viewing is projected to be around March 28 in Tokyo, April 2 in Hiroshima, April 2 in Osaka, and April 4 in Kyoto. Note that from the start of blooming, it takes a week for cherry blossoms to reach full bloom and begin fading a week later.
