Essentially, the meta in patch 12.2 revolves around 'going all in with rerolls,' and the key is to select the right units to upgrade to 3 stars.
So, why did the meta in Teamfight Tactics shift this way? According to T1's Bebe872, Riot reduced the appearance rate of 5-cost champions at level 8 to 4%, and they also nerfed the power of many other pivotal 4-cost champions. As a result, strategies that focus on hoarding gold, reaching level 8, and rolling for 2-star 4- and 5-cost champions have become significantly weaker and more prone to defeat. Consequently, players, including high-level ones, have turned to reroll compositions in patch 12.2.
Furthermore, most low to mid-cost core champions possess abilities that revolve around skills or traits. Hence, they are easily countered by well-rounded champions available at 4- and 5-costs, which excel in both offense and defense or offer strong crowd control. Clearly, with the devaluation of these champions, reroll compositions reign supreme as the most prominent counterplay is no longer prevalent.
In practice, as T1's Bebe872 stated, the majority of potent compositions with the highest top 4 placement rates in patch 12.2 employ the rerolling strategy. A prime example is various adaptations of the Empire composition, where champions like Swain, Talon, and Samira become incredibly formidable at 3-star levels. With substantial damage output augmented by the Warlord synergy, you can wreak havoc even when starting with defensive items.
Additionally, two team compositions, Twitch - Chemtech and Marksman - Guardian, are also recommended by T1's superstar for climbing ranks. The common feature of these compositions is rerolling at level 5 to quickly upgrade 1-cost champions to 3 stars. With extremely cheap purchase prices, these compositions can become powerful very early on and help players maintain excellent health in the mid-game.
Furthermore, some compositions that reroll 3-cost champions like Shaco, Malzahar, Cho'gath as core units can also be utilized if you're contested for 2-cost champions. However, Bebe872 advises against overly relying on obtaining 3-star 3-cost champions when playing these compositions.
