Many opinions suggest that the character Usopp from One Piece seems to draw inspiration from the Tengu mythology.
In One Piece, numerous events, images, and even characters have been inspired by real-life or mythical legends. One such example could be the sharpshooter of the Straw Hat Pirates. We can easily observe that Usopp stands out with his unique features. With his slender nose, sharpshooting skills, and particularly mischievous nature, many believe that Usopp might have been inspired by the Tengu mythology.
Who is Tengu?
Tengu is a creature in Japanese folklore, appearing in Shinto beliefs. It combines features of human, bird, and monkey. Although Tengu's appearance can vary depending on the region, the long nose and red skin remain its most distinctive characteristics.
Tengu is often known as a mischievous troublemaker, sometimes even portrayed as an antagonist. Tengu commits offenses such as kidnapping monks and nuns or attempting to seduce and deceive women. Even in the most favorable portrayals, Tengu is still depicted as a trickster or a playful disruptor.
Although all of this may sound quite different from the pirate adventures in One Piece, we can easily recognize these elements being quite prominent in the character of Usopp.
How did Tengu inspire the character of Usopp?
The most obvious and significant similarity between Usopp and Tengu is their large and elongated noses. Usopp's nose is not only long but also has a round and bulbous tip, resembling the shape of a Tengu. Additionally, Usopp portrays himself as a trickster, renowned for his tall tales and extravagant stories, much like how Tengu causes mischief and engages in banter with others.
Furthermore, Usopp's nickname, specifically 'God Usopp,' seems to have some connection to Tengu. As mentioned earlier, Tengu is a mythical figure or deity in Shinto beliefs. Even Usopp's flowing hair looks somewhat similar to depictions of Jesus Christ. These aspects might suggest that Usopp could be inspired by divine beings.
Based on all these explanations, it can be concluded that the author, Oda, diligently researched to create the character of Usopp. Surely, with his abilities, Usopp will bring forth many interesting developments in the future, living up to his moniker of 'God Usopp.'
