From ancient times, our ancestors have passed down highly effective folk remedies for caring for newborns and young children. Here is a compilation of some traditional tips for mothers to reference.
1. During pregnancy from the 5th month onwards
– Consuming sugarcane (drinking sugarcane water) regularly results in a clean and robust delivery.
– Drinking coconut water with fermented rice: facilitates an easy delivery and ensures a healthy baby.
2. When reaching the 32nd and 33rd weeks of pregnancy
To ensure that the baby does not experience teething issues and has a healthy digestive system, mothers should consume steamed pig stomach with peppercorns during weeks 32 and 33 of pregnancy.
Introducing a folk remedy that I have personally practiced and shared with many friends and family, proven to be effective:
To prevent teething problems and promote a healthy digestive system for the baby, mothers should eat steamed pig stomach with peppercorns during weeks 32 and 33 of pregnancy.
Ingredients:
– Pig stomach (small size)
– Peppercorns (1 ounce)
Clean the pig stomach thoroughly, stuff peppercorns into the temporary stitch to prevent them from coming out, and steam in a pot for about 30 minutes.

Ensure your baby never has to worry about buying digestive enzymes or medicine all day long. Remarkably, even if your bunny-like child ever experiences a bout, it's just a one-time loose episode—afterward, a couple of pieces of boiled carrots will solve everything. Teething also brings only a slight fever, with no digestive issues at all. At almost 3 years old, your child hasn't needed antibiotics yet. Tricky, huh?
Another approach:
My mother-in-law has an interesting experience. Just one week after giving birth, she asked for a pig's bladder at the pork store. She blanched it in hot water until it was slightly raw, then served it in a bowl for the new mother to drink. Dipping a cotton swab into it, she touched a bit to the baby's mouth. It's slightly bitter, and after drinking about 3-4 pig bladders like that, the baby won't experience teething issues and won't have any problems when the teeth come in. Our family's first baby benefited a lot from this method. Tricky, huh? The baby didn't even know what teething was; it was just delicious. Mothers, give it a try.
3. Teething without Fever
'Teething like the price, teething without fever.'4. Right after giving birth, to make breast milk fragrant
To make the breast milk fragrant, my mother-in-law boils a small amount of water with 7 jackfruit leaves (for a boy). Then she dips a comb into the jackfruit leaf water and strokes it down my chest right after giving birth. I don't know if it's because of that, but my milk smells really nice. Visitors even compliment the pleasant aroma of my mother's milk lingering in the room.
Want to boost milk supply quickly after childbirth
Method 1: Moms can buy Brandy and Malt, mix the two ingredients together until it's soft. Then apply it around the breast for about 20 minutes. The Malt and warm Brandy will quickly draw the milk ducts, and the milk will mature and become fragrant. The baby will love sucking. Moms, give it a try. It's guaranteed to be effective because I've applied it and succeeded. There was so much milk that the baby had to be stopped on one side, or else it would overflow everywhere.
For this, moms can also use massage for about 15 minutes on each side to open up the milk ducts and then wipe with a warm towel. This works well even for C-section deliveries, but the milk comes in quickly.
Method 2: Some moms, when having low milk supply, eat dog's feet, pig's trotters, but my sister isn't fond of those. She prefers water spinach (cooked with some other vegetable). It makes the breast full of milk.
5. When the baby loses the umbilical stump
To ensure the baby's stomach health, my grandmother has been doing this for generations, from my third, fourth, fifth, sixth uncles, and my youngest aunt. Moms, take note: when the baby loses the umbilical stump, whether early or late, it doesn't matter. Mix coconut oil with a bit of roasted sour alum, grind it into a paste.

Take a small square piece of cotton, soak it in the mixture, and apply it to the baby's belly button. Remove it when the cotton is dry. You only need to do it once. My child, done by my youngest aunt, never complains of stomachaches no matter what he eats. Sometimes he eats old food, cold food, and still doesn't have stomach pain. If it's severe, just give him a packet of probiotics, and he'll be healthy. These are some experiences I've applied and found effective with my child.
6. Baby cries with colic
Warm the betel leaves on the stove, press them on the baby's belly, then hold the baby close, pressing their stomach against yours. Let the warmth from you transfer to the baby. After a while, the baby will stop crying and sleep peacefully. This method is very effective for babies who cry at night due to imbalanced digestion.
Prepare 7-9 grains of dried areca nut, grind into powder, mix with warm water to make a paste. Before putting the baby to sleep, apply the medicine paste to the belly button and fix it with adhesive tape. Suitable for all types of babies with colic. If you can't find dried areca nuts around the house, you can buy them at a traditional medicine store.
In places where silkworms are raised, pick up naturally dead silkworms (due to bacterial infection), which are curved, white-spotted, and a bit smelly. Dry them and store them in a tightly sealed jar for later use. Folklore calls this type of silkworm 'dead silkworm,' and traditional medicine refers to it as 'white vital silk,' 'vital silk,' 'insect vitality,' or 'heavenly insect.' When a child suffers from night crying, before going to sleep, take a few silkworms, grind them into powder, mix with a bit of alcohol, warm it up, apply it to the soles of the child's feet, and then fix it with a bandage or adhesive tape. Suitable for all types of babies with colic.
7. Clean your baby's tongue

8. Treat baby's spitting up
When the baby spits up, find the tip of the bamboo (the sharp young leaf at the top of the bamboo cluster) and boil water for the baby to drink. According to folklore, for boys, use 7 tips, and for girls, use 9 tips. However, I always use multiples of 9 (my niece is a girl). The water is consumed like boiled water left to cool down.
My niece had severe spitting up, even when eating porridge. Some days, it happened over ten times, causing panic in the family. Hospital visits and Chinese herbal medicine didn't find the cause. Even the hired help quit after seeing her eat. Somehow, she responded well to this remedy.
9. Baby has diaper rash
Baby has diaper rash: grind bitter melon or crush kinh gioi leaves for baby's bath. Personally, I find kinh gioi leaves more effective than bitter melon.
10. Feed your baby roasted garlic to cure colds and sneezing
Today I just remembered a remedy I often apply for Thỏ, which is eating roasted garlic to treat colds and sneezing. Whenever I see Thỏ showing signs of a runny nose, I roast garlic for them to eat. When they were little, I roasted the garlic, ground it into powder, and mixed it with water for them to drink.

Mothers, don't worry, it's not spicy. Roasted garlic is sweet and fragrant, and Thỏ loves it. When they were a baby, they ate only one clove, and as they grew, it became 2 or 3 cloves, 2 or 3 times a day, depending on the severity. I guarantee that the next day, the runny nose and sneezing will be gone. Note that this remedy is only for early symptoms like sneezing and clear runny nose, not for more severe cases with green mucus.
11. Baby has constipation
When the baby was over a week old, they had constipation. I went to the pharmacy to buy a pump, used it, and the baby could go, but the constipation persisted. I called the doctor for advice, and the doctor suggested breaking the tip of a bunch of morning glory, peeling off the outer skin, and gently pushing the morning glory shoot into the baby's anus. Then slowly and gently push the morning glory shoot into the baby's anus, then take it out, push it in, repeat several times. Moms will see that the baby will poop right away. The doctor said the baby's anus is still tender, so avoid using a pump. Morning glory shoots have a slippery substance that won't harm the baby. Moms, please try it.
12. Baby has diarrhea
I have the experience that when a newborn has continuous diarrhea all day, moms can go to the pediatric hospital and buy a bottle of lime water for them to drink a few drops twice a day. It only takes 2 days, and the baby will recover. This is the experience shared by some local healthcare workers. It's that simple, but it saves so many diapers.
13. Post-vaccination - No Fever in Babies
– Before the vaccination day, moms, remember to buy back some basil, wash it clean, eat about a dozen leaves, the more, the better. Then let the baby urinate as much as possible. After vaccination, ensure the baby urinates a lot to avoid dehydration. The natural antibiotic in basil helps prevent the baby from having any fever.
For babies using formula milk, moms can crush basil leaves, mix them with warm water, and give it to the baby to drink.– After vaccination, take the cotton ball left at the injection site and keep it there until dry. Then apply a cold compress - by bringing along a cold towel stored in a cooler bag.
– Stick a fever-reducing patch (available at pharmacies) on the injection site. It will ease the pain, and the baby won't be fussy.
Experience 1: For Soon-to-be Moms
Around 35 weeks onwards, sitting at a three-way intersection and relieving yourself will make childbirth easy. I don't know if it's true, but both my babies did it. Choose the evening to stroll with your husband, pick a slightly deserted intersection, and quickly relieve yourself. Haha, believe it or not, both my babies were born quickly and easily. Believe it or not.
Experience 2: For New Moms
1/. Right after giving birth, when returning home from the hospital, after each lunch and dinner, roast 1kg of salt, wrap it in a newspaper or cloth, and lie face down pressing it on the roasted salt area. Lie down until the salt cools. Ensure a quick and compact abdomen. I only used salt for about 2 weeks after giving birth because my baby was very fussy, yet now my belly is flat as in my girlhood.
2/. I had a normal delivery, so I have no experience with C-sections. But for those who had a normal delivery, were cut in the perineum, after returning from the hospital, rinse with warm diluted saltwater daily. Just rinse 1-2 times a day, and the stitches will quickly reduce swelling, feeling clean and comfortable. The wound will heal very quickly.
Experience 3: For Babies
1/. This tip is a bit different, it's for moms who know the tips for babies mentioned above but were too late to apply them. There's still hope:
Every baby has a unique constitution, so it varies. But if you missed applying the chives for your baby at 100 days, it may still be okay for the baby. Both my babies didn't use anything, and all their teeth grew without any fever. Believe it or not.
2/. For babies breastfeeding, mothers absolutely should not consume oranges or fruits high in vitamin C after giving birth, as it may cause the baby to have diarrhea. Newborns often have loose stools due to the acidity of tomatoes and leafy greens, and mothers may mistakenly think it's normal. My first baby had no idea, ate various fruits, and had poor digestion. Following the mentioned remedy at 2 weeks, miraculously, the baby's stool became regular.
For Moms Preparing for Delivery

– Alternatively, close to delivery, have basil leaves ready at home. When there are signs of labor, boil a concentrated bowl of basil water, which has a similar effect. I kept basil leaves at home, but they withered before labor, and I rushed to the hospital without drinking.
After Mom Gives Birth
– Ask a family member to grind a cup of young nettle leaves for you to drink to expel postpartum discharge faster, cleaner, and avoid retention. I've tried it, and it's easy to drink, moms.
– Prepare a few yeast tablets beforehand. After giving birth, crush them and mix with alcohol/water (I used water), apply to the breasts for 20-30 minutes. Then, wash it off; your milk will come in faster and more plentifully. I did it, and the effect was remarkable. I had a vaginal delivery, but due to a postpartum infection, I had to take over 10 antibiotic shots. However, on the third day, the milk rushed in abundantly. In the first few days, even if the baby doesn't suckle or you don't feel the milk, try expressing colostrum for the baby. Colostrum contains many antibodies, very precious, moms.
Raising a Child
– When bringing the baby home from the hospital, lay the baby on a mat on the floor for a while before putting them in the crib. Doing this makes it easier to care for the baby. Whether it's because I did it or just a coincidence, my family finds it easy. With one and a half months old, I already have one child, and I don't feel busy or overwhelmed at all.
– After giving birth, twice a day, for lunch and dinner, steam a bowl of ripe papaya with a little sugar for the baby's digestion. It's beneficial for their intestines. Throughout the first month, I did this every day, then occasionally, along with eating ripe papaya myself.
– If the baby has a fever, crush the leaves of the hollyhock plant and apply them to the soles of the feet, hands, and forehead. Alternatively, crush the leaves of the hollyhock and dab them on the baby's gums; it also works to reduce fever. The mother can eat raw basil leaves and breastfeed; it helps lower the fever.
– If the baby has a cold, roast quince and add baking soda (avoid honey for those under one year old) for the baby to drink or eat; it will help relieve the symptoms.
– If the baby has a cough, steam persimmons with rock sugar (avoid honey for those under one year old) and give it to the baby; it can help alleviate coughing and may also aid in phlegm removal.
– If the baby has diarrhea, the mother can eat carrots, green bananas, steep guava leaves like tea, and give it to the baby. If the baby can eat, feed them these foods.
– If the baby is constipated, the mother can gently insert the pith of a loofah to help the baby pass stool more easily.
– If the baby has diaper rash, at night, when changing the baby's diaper, use saliva or rub the back of a shrimp on the affected area. Alternatively, apply the mother's saliva to the affected area when the baby is asleep.
– When taking the baby outside, bring a garlic bulb to ward off evil spirits or something similar. Some people bring a spoon or ladle as well.
– Place iron objects such as knives, scissors... at the baby's head to prevent them from startling. In the southern region, people often make a necklace from mulberry silk for the baby.
– If the baby has a tongue tie, the mother can crush young nettle leaves and apply the juice or honey to the baby's tongue. Personally, I prefer using physiological saline solution, and after a few times, the baby's tongue is clean without ties.
– When the baby is 3 months and 10 days old, the mother uses coriander leaves + mashed beans to rub the gums, saying 'grows teeth like beans, no fever when teething' to prevent fever during teething. Some people only rub coriander leaves, some crush coriander leaves to extract juice, and others follow the superstition that girls need 9 leaves, boys need 7 leaves. I'm trying the first method and waiting to see if it prevents fever during teething.
– When the baby is 3 or 4 months old, occasionally, while eating, the mother pretends to feed the baby with a spoon or fork to make it easier for the baby to eat solid food later, as the elders say, 'learns to eat quickly.' Hi
– When the baby is slow to walk, the mother buys a banana fish (snakehead fish) and gently taps it on the baby's legs, 7 times for a boy, 9 times for a girl, and the baby will learn to walk faster. My brother only started walking at 13 months, so my mother did this, and he quickly learned to walk steadily.
– When the baby starts babbling, while cooking soup, the mother lets the baby taste it and asks, 'Is it just right? Is it delicious?' This helps the baby learn to speak quickly. I'm currently waiting to see how it goes.
– If the baby unfortunately has a misshapen head, the mother gently touches the baby's head to the wall while saying 'lean the head against the wall', 7 times for a boy, 9 times for a girl. The baby's head will gradually become round. When my baby was 1 month old, I didn't pay attention to turning his head, so now he prefers lying on one side, and at 5 months, it hasn't improved. I'm trying this method now. In recent days, I've noticed that the baby tends to lie on the other side, and the head is a bit less flat.
