The weather turning cool, a plate of soft young tofu soaked in vibrant red spicy sauce, exuding an enticing aroma, paired with hot rice, will make you immediately empty the entire table! Let's watch and learn!
I prefer dining at Vietnamese eateries, rustic and authentic, rather than buffet restaurants serving hotpot and grill, partly because I adore Vietnamese cuisine, partly because I enjoy scanning the menu for delicious yet easy-to-make dishes to try at home!

Spicy tofu can be made with either fried tofu or white tofu
The other day, my husband took me to dine at Sơn Cước restaurant (right at 54 Nguyễn Khánh Toàn), noticing his special fondness for their spicy tofu dish, I decided to try making it at home, easy to make, economical yet incredibly satisfying, ladies, why not surprise your husbands with a new dish on a pleasant day!
How to make aromatic, tender, flavorful spicy tofu
Cut the tofu into small square pieces, fry until golden on both sides then drain the excess oil. I recommend choosing young tofu that is soft and smooth, almost as white as condensed milk, handle with care as it's fragile but it tastes delicious and absorbs flavors much better.

Pre-fry the tofu
Sauté fragrant onions, garlic, chili, and a little chopped spring onions, then add minced or ground meat (choose pork belly for its fatty and lean meat, ensuring it's not too dry or greasy) and stir-fry thoroughly over medium-high heat, you can add a bit of fish sauce and salt to enhance the meaty flavor. When the meat turns golden brown with rich aroma, remove and set aside.

Sauté onions, garlic, chili
Add tomatoes to the pot, stir until slightly mushy like sauce, season with spices to taste then pour in the cooked meat. Add chili paste, stir well until the mixture turns evenly red and thickens.

Sauté meat and make sauce
Now add a little oyster sauce, keep the heat low, stir for about 5 minutes to let the ingredients absorb the seasoning evenly. If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can also add a little sugar.
Pour water over the meat until it covers the surface, then simmer until boiling, then add the pre-fried tofu on top. Note that after adding the tofu, do not stir anymore to avoid breaking it. Instead, gently shake or tilt the pot/pan to let the tofu soak up the sauce.

Add tofu, avoid stirring to prevent tofu from breaking
Then, add finely chopped spring onions and a few drops of vinegar, simmer for about 1 to 2 minutes before turning off the heat.
Delicious ways to enjoy spicy tofu
That day at Sơn Cước, I had spicy tofu with fragrant, sticky, and white glutinous rice, which was quite unique. However, the best way to enjoy this dish is still to scoop it out and eat it with hot rice, simple yet incredibly satisfying.

This dish is best enjoyed hot with white rice, or you can try it with sticky glutinous rice like I did at Sơn Cước, incredibly unique.
My husband used to dislike tofu, but he couldn't resist this dish, maybe the slight spiciness suited his taste as he ended up ordering a second plate. Never have we gone to a restaurant where... it's so affordable, because he only eats rice with tofu!
If you're going for drinks at Sơn Cước, just two people like my husband and me, I highly recommend a few dishes like spicy tofu, sticky glutinous rice, steamed/grilled sam sen birds, or a mixed plate of pork and innards, delicious, affordable, easy to eat, and unique.

Sơn Cước is our company's regular hangout spot, but my husband and I also often come here on weekends because it's close to home, delicious, and cheap too
For larger company parties, dishes like pig's trotters, chicken, or stone crab hotpot, when calculated, are actually very affordable and delicious!
