Ingredients for our floral package:
- 250g of fresh deli meat
- 3 ears of shiitake mushrooms
- 1/2 carrot, finely sliced
- 2 squash pods
- 3 chicken eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch, a few drops of sesame oil, and freshly ground black pepper
- 1 15cm-long section of Chinese sausage (or several shorter sections connected)
Banana leaves and twine (for wrapping).
How to make floral package:
Step 1: Separate egg yolks and whites. Mix cornstarch with a little water, then add to egg yolks along with a few drops of sesame oil, beat until smooth, and spread thinly on a pan. Beat egg whites until frothy and cook until set.
Step 2: Soak shiitake mushrooms in boiling water until soft, then rinse, squeeze dry, and slice thinly. Peel and wash carrots, then julienne. Cook Chinese sausage until fully cooked. Quickly pass banana leaves over flame to soften and prevent tearing.
Step 3: Divide raw deli meat into 2 equal portions, leave one portion as is, and mix the other with carrots, shiitake mushrooms, and pepper. Season with a little seasoning powder if desired.
Step 4: Spread a sheet of plastic wrap, place the plain deli meat portion (unmixed) in the middle, spread evenly, then layer the beaten egg whites on top, followed by the mixed deli meat and vegetables, placing the Chinese sausage in the center, and the squash pods on either side, then roll up tightly.
Step 5: Pinch both ends and roll to shape the deli roll evenly.
Step 6: Place the egg yolk piece on top of a banana leaf, unwrap the plastic wrap and place the deli roll on it, roll up the egg, then roll the banana leaf around the outside, wrapping it like a traditional Vietnamese cylindrical glutinous rice cake.
Step 7: Place a steamer pot on the stove, bring water to a boil, then steam the deli roll for about 45 minutes until cooked. Remove and let it cool before slicing and arranging on a plate.
