Researchers propose that more than 80% of Earth's surface has been shaped by volcanic activities spanning millions of years. They have directly formed mountain ranges, plains, and plateaus. Furthermore, nutrient-rich basaltic soils essential for agriculture have originated from volcanic sources.Volcanic eruptions also aid in cooling the Earth. When volcanoes erupt, ash and sulfur released into the atmosphere combine with water vapor and linger in the air for several years. This combination mitigates the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth's surface, thus reducing the global warming effect. Dr. Tracy Gregg, associate professor of geology at the University at Buffalo (New York, USA), informed Accuweather that volcanoes have assisted Earth in reducing its temperature by 2 - 3 degrees Celsius compared to the expected warming rate.
