Tackling stone and brick drilling can prove to be a formidable task, especially when all you seek is to embellish your space with seasonal charm. Thankfully, there exist alternatives that offer a temporary solution, allowing for the swift and effortless hanging of garland on stone and brick surfaces. Adhesive hooks emerge as the simplest and most adaptable option for most stone surfaces. Alternatively, brick clips present an equally convenient choice for those aiming to adorn a brick wall or fireplace with garland.
Procedures
Adhesive Hooks
Indoor hooks for fireplaces and outdoor hooks for exterior walls. Opt for indoor adhesive hooks to suspend garland on a stone or brick fireplace. Alternatively, choose outdoor adhesive hooks for locations like outdoor stone or brick walls.
- Avoid employing indoor hooks for outdoor usage, as they lack the durability to withstand elements, particularly harsh winter conditions, potentially causing the garland to fall over time.
- Note that this approach may not be universally effective on all types of stone surfaces. It functions optimally on smooth surfaces such as painted brick or cement, as opposed to raw brick, for which the hooks are not designed.
Peel the protective backing off and affix the adhesive strips to the backs of the hooks. Examine the adhesive strips to locate the side marked with the brand name or the word “hook.” Remove the backing from this side of the strips and attach a strip to the back of each hook intended for use. If you plan to remove the hooks easily after displaying your garland, position the strips so that the tab or rounded end protrudes from the top of each hook. For permanent installation, position the strips to conceal the tab beneath the bottom ends of the hooks.
Apply pressure to a hook against the stone surface at the desired starting point for draping the garland. Remove the backing from the other side of the double-sided adhesive strip. Align the hook on the surface to ensure it is straight, then firmly press it against the stone to secure it in place. Note that the stone surface must be relatively flat for proper adhesion of the strips.
Position additional hooks evenly spaced across the entire surface. Remove the backing from each additional hook, one at a time, and firmly press it onto the surface. Space the hooks approximately 2 feet (0.61 meters) apart. Although not mandatory, maintaining this spacing provides a useful guideline. Adjust the spacing as needed if the surface width is not evenly divisible by 2 feet (0.61 meters).
Arrange the garland across the hooks, allowing it to drape evenly between each hook. Insert one end of the garland into the initial hook on the surface. Allow it to drape down to your desired extent between each successive hook. Continue inserting the garland into each hook until reaching the final one. Alternatively, for a tidy appearance, hang the garland straight across the surface from hook to hook without creating droops.
Secure the garland using Brick Clips.
Utilize brick clips for hanging garland on brick or stone surfaces with recessed mortar. These metal clips hook into the gaps between bricks or stones where mortar is present, making them ideal for adorning a brick fireplace, mantel, or exterior stone wall.
Attach a brick clip to the desired location on the brick to begin hanging the garland. Ensure the clip is oriented with the small hooks facing upward and the narrow bottom end tucked beneath the bottom edge of the brick or stone. Secure the clip firmly by sliding it upwards until the top end clips over the brick's top edge.
Evenly distribute additional brick clips across the surface. Place each clip approximately 2 feet (0.61 meters) apart, adjusting as necessary if the surface width isn't divisible by this measurement. Each clip can support up to 25 pounds (11 kilograms), so use enough clips to adequately support the weight of your garland.
Insert the garland's greenery into the clips on each hook. Begin by tucking some greenery into the first brick clip. Depending on your desired aesthetic, either drape the garland for a drooping effect or run it straight across to the next hook. Repeat this process for each hook until the garland spans the entire surface.
Helpful TipsIf you're dealing with a painted brick surface, consider using the adhesive hook method as brick clips may not adhere securely to painted bricks.
CautionsAvoid using indoor adhesive hooks on outdoor stone surfaces as they may not withstand weather exposure and could fall down.
