MathType is a software for composing mathematical formulas, quite effective, convenient, and faster compared to the built-in tools like Equation in Word and Excel. Adding Mathtype to Word involves simply installing this software on your computer. Both installation and usage of MathType are quite straightforward and not at all complicated.
Writing mathematical formulas in Word 2019 using MathType
Guide to Embedding Mathtype into Word 2019
Step 1: Download and install MathType on your computer following the instructions provided here.
Step 2: After successfully installing MathType, open Word 2019 to check if the MathType tab appears on the Word menu. If it does, proceed to Step 5. If not, follow these steps:
Step 3: Access the data directory of MathType on the newly installed system.
If you install MathType for Windows 64-bit, you navigate to the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\MathType. For the 32-bit MathType version, replace the above path with Program Files instead of C:\Program Files (x86).
After accessing the MathType folder, proceed to select the MathPage subdirectory as depicted in the image.
Step 4: Within the interface upon opening -> further navigate to the 64 folder.
Once opened, you'll find the file MathPage.wll as shown below. Click to select and then proceed to copy this directory. You can either click to select -> then press Ctrl + C to copy. It's advisable to copy the directory path of the MathPage.wll file and save it in Notepad for easier retrieval.
Step 5: Next, locate the Office installation directory on your computer. If you have the 32-bit Office version installed, navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office. If it's the 64-bit Office version, access C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office.
Here, you'll find a directory named Office 16 for Word 2019. Note that the folder name may vary depending on the Office version you've installed, such as Office14 if you're using Word 2010...
Step 6: At this stage, simply paste the MathPage.wll file you copied earlier into this Office16 directory. This successfully integrates MathType into the Word interface.
Step 7: Proceed to reopen the Word 2019 interface, and you'll notice the MathType section appearing on the Word menu toolbar.
To use, click on MathType -> then select Inline below. Immediately, the MathType interface will appear.
Step 8: At this step, write the formula or expression you want to use in Word -> then highlight and choose Copy.
Next, paste the formula or expression into the Word interface -> and you'll see the formula appear on the Word interface as shown in the image below:
Thus, you have successfully completed the installation and embedding of Mathtype into Word 2019. When adding Mathtype, this application and Word will operate independently of each other, without affecting each other when performing actions on these two tools. Clearly, using Mathtype on Word allows for a much richer variety of mathematical equations and expressions supported by Mathtype compared to the built-in equation input feature in Word or Excel.
However, if the usage is purely straightforward, without requiring complexity or sophistication, inserting mathematical formulas into Word or inserting decimals, exponents, etc., can still be accomplished using the conventional method by directly utilizing the built-in tools in Word, which is the quickest and most effective approach.
