During the recent event, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom declared that IGTV is designed to facilitate easy video search and viewing on mobile phones, with videos of up to 1 hour length and exclusively vertical.
Any user can upload videos from the dedicated app or on Instagram. When opening IGTV, the app will automatically play videos without the need for searching. Video suggestions are based on the user's Instagram followings.
With the launch of IGTV, Instagram's move is clearly aimed at YouTube, the largest video sharing platform today.
Instagram's photo and video sharing social network has surpassed 1 billion users, primarily consisting of teenagers. A recent Pew study shows that the number of teenage Instagram users (around 72%) is nearly equivalent to YouTube users (around 85%). Similar research results indicate that 95% of teenage smartphone users. With this user base, Instagram could lay the groundwork to compete with YouTube.
Facebook's parent company is also striving to develop its own video platform, offering new ways for creators to earn money from videos. With IGTV, Instagram provides another avenue for generating advertising revenue.
Currently, IGTV limits the maximum video length to 10 minutes for most regular users and 1 hour for famous accounts. However, Instagram plans to gradually remove these length restrictions in future updates, allowing for unrestricted video duration similar to YouTube.
