Instagram is bringing the Reels video editing tool - TikTok's competitor - to new markets, specifically France and Germany, following its deployment in Brazil last year. Reels allows users to capture short 15-second video clips and share them on the platform, where they can gain popularity. The Reels feature is similar to TikTok, including a video editing toolkit, making it easy for users to create creative videos.

Previously, Reels videos could only be shared in Instagram Stories. However, the Instagram community expressed the desire for the ability to share Reels videos with followers and friends for a longer duration, along with a dedicated space for easy editing and viewing of other users' Reels.
In addition to launching Reels in Germany and France, Instagram has moved Reels to a dedicated space on user profiles and in the Explore section for public accounts, allowing people to share videos with new viewers and on the Instagram Feed. Instagram hasn't disclosed plans for global Reels rollout or when they intend to bring the product to the U.S., but mentions that expanding this feature will enable the company to continue enhancing the current experience and further developing the product.
It's not surprising that Instagram is cautious about expanding the accessibility of Reels. The social network is striving to compete with TikTok, much like they did with Snapchat, by emulating key features while ensuring they fit the Instagram interface. To achieve this, the company needs to understand how users will genuinely react, and this takes time.
