In the coming weeks, Instagram will start reminding previously unadded users to provide information about their date of birth. Initially, users will be able to dismiss the prompt, but if they continue to refuse, they will not be able to continue using the app.
Instagram requires users to share their birthday to protect minors' safety
According to Instagram, this is to make the photo-sharing social media platform safer for young users. Instagram once allowed anyone to create an account without adding their date of birth, which could expose teenagers to content they shouldn't see. The company stated: 'Birthday information enables us to create new safety features for young people and help ensure providing age-appropriate experiences for the right age group'.

For anyone who hasn't added their date of birth in the app, Instagram will start annoying them with pop-up windows on the main screen to request that information. Users will be prompted 'several times,' and a separate prompt may also appear if users attempt to view a post hidden behind a warning screen. These warnings appear on 'sensitive content' that may not align with Instagram's official rules but could be considered boundaries, such as 'suggestive' imagery or images related to medical topics. Users will not be able to view these posts until they provide their date of birth.
And for those attempting to circumvent this request by entering false birthdates, Instagram is developing new tools to detect this misinformation. If Instagram's system detects someone's date of birth doesn't match what the AI has found, the user will be asked to 'verify' their age.

Instagram has been and is striving to enhance security features and privacy rights for its younger user base, and these are the latest changes they're implementing. The company also stated they will set teenage accounts to private mode by default and limit advertisers' targeting capabilities. According to Mytour.vn's findings, the notification requesting date of birth information will begin appearing this week on the Instagram app for mobile devices and will continue to roll out in the coming weeks to reach more users.
