Recently, Valve distributed 300 Steam Machines to fortunate individuals. Alongside, Valve released Steam OS – an operating system specifically designed for gaming – for users to install on their computers.
As mentioned earlier, only Steam Machines come pre-installed with Steam OS. For other users who wish to experience it, the only option is to install Steam OS on their computers.
The first step is to ensure that your computer is capable of installing Steam OS.
Below is the configuration required by Valve:
Based on the aforementioned requirements, it's essential to note that your computer must have an NVIDIA discrete graphics card, specifically a Geforce card. Systems without a discrete card, such as those from ATI, currently cannot support installation. Additionally, your motherboard must support UEFI (most modern motherboards do). UEFI is a standard software interface for controlling computers, introduced to replace BIOS. To configure UEFI, boot your machine and press F2 to access BIOS, then navigate to the boot section and select UEFI boot. If BIOS lacks this option, it indicates that your motherboard doesn't support UEFI.
Here's the simplest and safest way to install Steam OS:
First, prepare a USB with a minimum capacity of 4GB and the Steam OS installer (available for download Here). Note that installing Steam OS will erase all data on your hard drive. After downloading the installer, format the USB to FAT32. It's a straightforward process: plug in the USB, right-click on the USB drive on your computer, select Format, choose FAT32 under File system, rename the USB to SYSRESTOREE, and then click Start.
Next, extract the downloaded Steam OS installer onto the USB drive. Then, restart your computer and press F10 to select USB boot.
When the installation screen appears, select the “Restore Entire Disk” option and wait for the computer to automatically install the STEAM OS operating system. Installing the STEAM OS operating system makes it easy for you to play games on your computer, serving as a tool for gamers to conquer games quickly and easily.
