Learn how to easily install a Nest thermostat, a smart device that adjusts temperature based on your habits. Discover the convenience of controlling your home's climate from your smartphone and saving money in the process. To begin, uninstall your current thermostat if you have centralized heating and cooling.
Installation Steps
Removing Your Old Thermostat
Unboxing Your Nest Kit: Ensure you have all the necessary items including labels, a screwdriver, screws, a trim plate, and the Nest unit itself. If applicable, separate the base plate and display unit before proceeding.
Power Off Your Thermostat: Locate your circuit breaker and switch off the power to your thermostat to avoid any electrical hazards or damage.
Detach the Thermostat Cover: Utilize the provided Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the cover of your current thermostat. You might need an alternative screwdriver depending on the model.
Identify and Label Wires: Next to the wires connected to your current thermostat, you'll find labels. Use the labels provided with your Nest unit to tag these wires correctly. This prevents any accidental connections that could cause system malfunctions.
Remove Existing Wires: After labeling, carefully remove the wires from the back of the thermostat. Take your time to avoid damaging any components.
Prepare for Nest Installation: With the old thermostat removed, you'll have exposed wires ready for the Nest installation process.
Mounting the Nest
Feed the labeled wires through the central hole of the Nest base. Ensure all wires pass through smoothly. Optionally, if you wish to conceal previous screw holes, attach the trim plate to the wall beforehand.
Position the Nest base flush against the wall surface. Ensure it sits evenly without any tilting.
Verify the levelness of the base. Check the bubble level at the bottom of the Nest base plate; it should align precisely between the two central posts.
Mark the positions for screw holes on the base. Once the base is level, make guide marks for screw placement to maintain its alignment during installation.
Secure the base to the wall. Utilize the provided screwdriver or drill along with the screws provided to affix the Nest unit securely to the wall.
Connect the wiring. Match the labels on each wire to those on the base plate, then insert them into the corresponding holes. Ensure each wire snaps securely into place.
Attach the Nest display. Align the connectors on the display plate with those on the base plate, then firmly press the display onto the base. With the Nest thermostat installed, proceed to configure its settings.
Configuring the Nest
Restore power to the thermostat. Flip the circuit breaker switch for your thermostat back to the 'On' position. This will power up the Nest unit, allowing you to continue with its setup.
Press the Nest ring twice as directed. Upon seeing the 'Press to CONTINUE' notification on the Nest screen, press the silver ring encircling the Nest display, then repeat the action on the subsequent screen.
Choose a Wi-Fi network. When prompted with the 'CONNECT' message, press the ring, then use the Nest dial to scroll through and select your current network. Confirm your selection by pressing the ring.
Input your Wi-Fi network password. Rotate the Nest dial clockwise to cycle through letters, pressing the ring to select each letter. Once complete, select ✓ at the top of the Nest screen and press the ring.
Verify the wiring on the screen. Press the ring on the screen displaying the connected wires diagram to ensure correct installation of your Nest's wires. If any connector has a red dot, consider tightening the wire.
Follow the on-screen instructions. Provide your ZIP code, specify if it's a home or business, indicate the number of thermostats, describe your heating system, and respond to questions about forced air heating if applicable.
Adjust your desired temperature. Rotate the Nest dial clockwise to raise the temperature or counterclockwise to lower it. The projected temperature will display in the center of the Nest screen, while the current temperature will appear next to a white line on the display's edge.
