Play Well, Go Home Twice!
Old-school gamers are familiar with Ghosts ‘N Goblins, a super famous game on NES, known for its uniqueness and terrifying difficulty. Playing as King Arthur on a quest to rescue his beloved, you'll embark on a legendary adventure where the character only has 2 hit points. Losing both means starting over, making Ghosts ‘N Goblins the benchmark of horrifyingly difficult games back then.
The final boss in the game is Satan, and only about 5% of gamers make it to the final level to defeat him. But just when you think you've made it, a message pops up, revealing that it was all an illusion and Arthur's dream. You'll have to start over if you want to truly defeat Satan. Gamers will experience hell once again, defeat Satan once more before meeting the princess.
But this return journey is even more trolling, as after just 3 seconds of the cutscene, the game will congratulate you for winning Ghosts ‘N Goblins, and the main reward is... playing it again immediately and swiftly transitioning back to the first scene. So, the second return is just for a few seconds of cutscene, a truly wholesome troll move.
Stinky Loot
The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is a masterpiece, there's no denying that, but it's also a game that knows how to troll players. In the game, there's a side quest that requires you to find 900 Korok Seeds for Hestu. Just hearing about it is exhausting, but those who tirelessly find all 900 Korok Seeds are rewarded with an item called Hestu's Gift and... a dance from Hestu.
But that's not the only troll move from Nintendo, because Hestu’s Gift - the gift Hestu gives you to mark your friendship - smells really bad. Based on the description and appearance of this item, it's not hard to realize that you've been searching all over the game for something... a turd from Hestu. And remember, this entire side quest gives you absolutely nothing, it's that useless.
Not sure if gamers spent dozens of hours searching for 900 seeds all over the world just to realize they've been face-rolled. Rarely has a side quest in gaming history rewarded players with such a giant turd.
Nightmare Gun for Ears
When talking about trolling game moments, leaving out Borderlands would indeed be a mistake. This game has many moments trolling gamers, but one of the most famous troll moves is the Bane gun. You're introduced to it in a grandiose way as a 'powerful cursed gun, are you brave or stupid enough to tame it', and you eagerly go to find it. After completing a very grand mission, you finally own the legendary gun called The Bane, now it's time for this regret.
First, when using The Bane, your character moves at 90% reduced speed compared to normal, and that's not the worst part. Every time you fire a bullet, this gun screams loudly in a terrifying tone. Yes, you didn't mishear, it actually screams in the most literal sense, at an ear-splitting 80 decibels that's enough to make listeners depressed and smash their devices.
And even though it deals fairly decent damage, The Bane's bullets literally disappear into the void, plus the -90% speed and screaming sound every time you fire, it's nerve-wracking to even think about using The Bane. This trolling moment is truly great, as it not only attacks the nerves but also the dignity of the gamers.
No More Piracy
No game publisher wants their game to be cracked and pirated, but using it in a trolling way like Game Dev Tycoon from Greenheart Games is another story. True to its name, in this game you'll play as the manager of an indie studio, creating hit games on the market. However, the statistics on Game Dev Tycoon's launch day were not great, as 3104 out of 3318 releases on the market were pirated copies.
However, Greenheart Games saw this as an opportunity to advertise and take advantage of trolling cracked users. They deliberately uploaded another version for people to download freely, but while playing, a message will appear stating that the game the player made is cracked and cannot make a profit. And this trolling move has no end, because the longer you play, the more the game is pirated, to the point where the studio doesn't have money to sustain and goes bankrupt, a very effective way to recreate reality and encourage gamers to buy the original version.
Greenheart Games' trolling move turned out to be effective, as evidenced by Game Dev Tycoon's popularity and subsequent huge success, scoring 10/10 on Steam, so as long as you're crazy enough, trolling can also be a form of advertising.
Appearance Matters
Appearance is very important both in real life and in games, but doing it like Rockstar is a different story. For example, in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, you can customize the appearance and do many things with CJ, including making him obese. If you're lazy and don't exercise, CJ's appearance will become more and more bulky to the point of looking extremely ridiculous.
And this not only affects the visual aspect, but some side missions and NPCs in the game will reject CJ, and the game even trolls to the extent that every time you step out onto the street, there will be countless people insulting you for having such an obese body. This trolling moment continues in Red Dead Redemption 2 with much higher accuracy, especially when players refuse to cut Arthur's hair or shave.
If you don't take care of the character's appearance, when entering residential areas, Arthur will be avoided, spat at, and called names like dirty pig or slave by passersby. Restaurants will refuse to serve or even kick Arthur out until he washes up to resemble a human again. That's why no matter where you are, cleanliness will always be prioritized.
