Introducing the BMW M 1000 RR: BMW's first 'M' branded motorcycle, priced at nearly 1.6 billion dong
BMW has long been known for producing high-performance 'M' labeled cars, but never before have they ventured into the realm of 'M' motorcycles. That changes now. Based on the S 1000 RR platform, BMW has crafted the M RR, designed for professional racing performance. Unlike the HP4, the M 1000 RR is fully road-legal, and BMW isn't limiting production of this 'M' variant: simply place your order, and BMW will deliver.
Born to meet the regulations of the FIM World Superbike and Supertock races, the M 1000 RR is developed from the S 1000 RR, featuring a 999cc inline-four engine with ShiftCam technology. Alongside increased power and reduced weight, the M 1000 RR boasts an expanded suite of electronic aids, aerodynamic enhancements, and chassis refinements. While the S 1000 RR with the M package sells for 1,069,000,000 dong, the M 1000 RR commands a price nearing 1.6 billion dong. This bike serves as a precursor for WSB or BSB racing teams to develop their own race machines.Theo BMW, the M 1000 RR can generate a power output of 212 horsepower @14,500 rpm and 113 Nm @11,000 rpm. Compared to the S 1000 RR, this M variant increases by 5 horsepower (212 compared to 207) but at a higher RPM by 1,000. Why is that so? The M version's piston is lighter than the S version by 12g, along with a connecting rod made of lighter and longer titanium and a higher compression ratio. As a result, this bike can shave off 0.4 seconds when accelerating from 0 to 200 km/h. The rear disc adds one tooth compared to the S version, 46 versus 45, and the Akrapovic exhaust system is 3.6 kg lighter.
With the increased power, BMW also slightly alters the geometric structure of the bike. The wheelbase is longer, from 1441mm to 1457mm (due to a longer rear swingarm by 11.7mm). The fork's top can be adjusted more comfortably than the S 1000 RR. The fuel tank has a capacity of 16.5 liters.Drawing from BMW's racing experience in WorldSBK, the M RR is equipped with the finest braking system from Nissin. BMW has painted them green and attached the 'M' logo on the calipers as a symbol of the high performance of this braking system. The suspension system is made by Marzocchi, adjustable manually rather than electronically. The most striking feature on the M RR is the dual-layer carbon fiber winglets designed to create downforce and thus improve stability when running at high speeds (over 200 km/h). The windscreen is slightly higher than usual, allowing the rider to tuck in better, reducing aerodynamic drag.Every detail on the M RR is meticulously crafted by BMW with high levels of finishing. Moreover, many parts are carbon fiber, such as the wheels; while other components like the footrests and brake lever are made from high-quality solid aluminum. Thus, the M 1000 RR is the first motorcycle bearing BMW's 'M' badge, serving as a strong statement of the German manufacturer's performance prowess. The M RR essentially serves as a blank canvas for racing teams and enthusiasts to build their ideal machine, with a solid foundation from the engine, frame, aerodynamics, and electronics. This is a bike not for the masses, not just about price, but also about understanding what the bike can deliver and one's ability to fully exploit its potential.Special thanks to BMW Motorrad Phú Nhuận for their invaluable support in crafting this article and video.
