In iOS 16, the photo app will introduce new features such as removing duplicates and the ability to lock hidden and recently deleted photo folders. Additionally, the app can translate text and introduce some new enhancements for user functionality. This greatly improves the user experience and changes the way you use your iPhone on a daily basis.
New Features in the iOS 16 Photo App
Locking Hidden and Recently Deleted Albums
The new iOS 16 operating system updates bring additional security features for the photo app. Albums such as hidden and recently deleted ones will automatically be locked using Face ID and Touch ID. Not everyone can access these albums unless you permit it. This is an extremely useful feature, ensuring user privacy on iPhones.
Currently, there's no option to unlock these two albums as this is a system-level lock, unalterable. However, there will be an additional option to hide previously hidden albums.
Duplicate Detection
In the latest iPhone operating system, duplicate images in the photo app will be automatically detected. These images will appear in the “Duplicate Items” album within the Utility section. Now, you'll find it much easier to locate and delete these images to free up space on your iPhone.
Additionally, duplicate items will have a merge option. With this option, images will be consolidated to deliver the best quality result.
For example:If you have one copy with high resolution and another copy with more data, both images will create a composite image of the highest quality.
After updating to iOS 16, your iPhone will continuously scan for duplicate photos, so duplicate images may appear after a while.
Copy and Paste Edits
If you want your photos edited in a consistent style, in iOS 16, Apple allows you to copy edits from one photo to another. This will help you save a lot of time while ensuring consistent quality for your photos.
To use this feature, simply make edits to a photo, then tap on the three-dot icon in the top right corner. Now choose 'Copy Edits', then select a photo you want to apply the changes to, tap the three-dot icon again, and choose 'Paste Edits' to finish.
Sort People Albums
This is a small but convenient change for users, the option to sort people albums added by Apple. Now you can sort people by name by: Open the People album, then press the two arrow keys to switch from 'Custom Order' to 'Name'. After selecting Name, the people in the album will be sorted alphabetically.
Share Your Photo Library via iCloud
The feature in iOS 16 will be somewhat similar to the previously available iCloud sharing, however, this feature can share with up to 5 people.
To use the new iCloud sharing, you'll need to configure some feature settings in the settings app on your device.
Separate Subject from Background
This isn't exactly a feature of the photo app because you simply press and hold until the photo lights up, then just drag it elsewhere or copy it to the clipboard. Now you can use it for various purposes.
Display Highlighted Content
iOS 16 allows you to toggle Memories & Featured Photos. This feature enables featured photos and memories to automatically appear on your device. This makes it easier for you to find photos tailored to you from past times. Or you can disable this feature to choose photos according to your preferences.
Undo for Each Edit
This feature is incredibly important but has been missing in many previous iOS versions. With a dedicated undo button for each edit, it brings more flexibility to photo customization. Now you can revert each edit when you tweak some parameters instead of undoing the entire photo and going back to square one.
Unlike previous iOS versions, you had to manually revert edits that went wrong. In iOS 16, the undo icons are placed at the top left of the app, allowing you to quickly correct any missteps and adjust edits to better align with your original intentions.
New Features in the Camera App on iOS 16
Background Blur in Portrait Mode
When using Portrait mode, you can blur foreground objects to create a photo with depth and realism. This is somewhat similar to the background blur feature when using the telephoto camera to take photos. This provides you with better Bokeh photos and highlights the subject more. However, this feature will only work on iPhone 13 series.
Language Translation with Camera
The regular translation feature on iPhone is now upgraded to translate directly using the Camera. You can translate signs, menus, packaging, etc., by simply opening the camera, pointing it at the text, and tapping the Text Translation icon for quick translation. This is extremely useful when traveling as you can quickly identify without having to translate each word as before.
Improved Video Quality with Cinematic Mode
On the iPhone 13 series, Apple introduced Cinematic Mode, delivering impressive film-style videos. With iOS 16, Cinematic Mode has been significantly improved to enhance the filming experience in scenes with better brightness and depth of field. Additionally, image stabilization capabilities have been improved to ensure smoother footage.
