This groundbreaking invention by Professor Homei Miyashita from Meiji University, Japan, is called Taste the TV (TTTV). Viewers can now experience the taste of food simply by licking the screen.Because seeing and hearing is not enough; true sensory immersion requires tasting. To project the flavors onto the screen, the TTTV is equipped with a conveyor belt containing 10 aroma cartridges that work together to recreate the taste of a specific dish. The flavor sample is then rolled onto a sanitary film on the flat screen of the TV, allowing you to lick the screen and experience the taste firsthand.According to Professor Miyashita, amidst the COVID-19 era, this technology could enhance human connectivity and interaction with the outside world. He stated: 'The goal is to help people experience something akin to dining at a restaurant in a different part of the world while being at home.'
Miyashita, along with a group of 30 students, previously developed various flavor-enhancing devices, such as a fork that intensifies the taste of food. Regarding the TTTV device, he mentioned having personally prototyped it over the course of a year, and its commercial version is expected to be priced at around 100,000 yen ($875).The potential applications of TTTV include remote training for chefs and utilization in puzzle games through taste testing. Miyashita is in discussions with companies regarding the incorporation of his flavor-enhancing technology into various applications, such as a device for adding pizza or chocolate flavoring onto a slice of toast. He aims to establish a platform where individuals can share the flavors of various global cuisines. Users would download and taste them on their TVs, akin to sharing a piece of music.
The TTTV prototype was showcased to the press in Japan, where a Meiji University student even attempted to taste the sweet chocolate displayed on the screen. After issuing voice commands a few times, the system responded, and aroma dispensers produced a chocolate flavor sample on the screen.
The student remarked, 'It tastes like milk chocolate, and it's as sweet as chocolate sauce.'Theo: Reuters
