iOS 14.5, currently in testing phase with its initial beta, appears to introduce a long-awaited feature: the ability to set third-party music streaming services as default. Initially, beta users noticed that with iOS 14.5, you can set Spotify or other music services as default when requesting Siri to play a song.
Users aren't certain about being able to change the default music streaming service on iOS 14.5.
This means that instead of assigning a third-party music app with each request, Siri will remember your preference and launch the service you initially specified. However, Apple clarified this by emphasizing that in iOS 14.5, users cannot actually choose a new default music service.
This is because the feature relies on Siri's intelligence, which can track your music listening habits over time and predict which app you're likely to want to use at that moment. In other words, you can use Siri to play music from your chosen service, but there's no setting in iOS for you to set your default music service, unlike the available options for setting default browsers or email services.
Apple seems to still be fine-tuning this feature, as it was removed from the second beta before being reintroduced in the third beta this week. Apple declined to comment on whether it will appear in the public release of iOS 14.5.
