Since the debut of Face ID in 2017, this technology has gradually replaced Touch ID on subsequent flagship iPhone models. Currently, the only model from the company to use fingerprint sensor technology is the 2022 edition.

However, recent rumors indicate that Apple is planning to reintroduce Touch ID to the iPhone lineup by integrating it beneath the screen. The company has secured numerous patents related to this technology.
Recently, Apple has received additional patents related to in-screen Touch ID, combining short-wave infrared technology with an optical system to offer more features to users. The latest strategy from the company not only aims to read users' fingerprints upon touching the screen but also to identify vein patterns, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, the presence of gloves, and humidity.
Despite this, the implementation of this technology has faced continuous delays for the iPhone. In a research note in September 2021, Kuo predicted that Apple would introduce at least one new iPhone model with an under-screen fingerprint scanner in the second half of 2023. However, 7 months later, the analyst suggested that Apple is unlikely to release any iPhone model with in-screen Touch ID in 2023 or 2024.
According to reliable reports, Apple has experimented with under-screen fingerprint scanners for at least one model, but this plan has not been realized. In the latest development, according to the news aggregation account 'yeux1122' on the Korean blog Naver, industry sources now believe that Apple will introduce Touch ID under the screen within 2 to 3 years after launching Face ID under the screen. Let's wait and see!
