1. What day is Thanh Minh?
Thanh Minh is the fifth solar term in the 24 seasonal divisions, occurring 60 days after Lap Xuan and 105 days after Dong Chi. Thanh Minh marks the beginning of this solar term.
In 2023, Thanh Minh falls on 5th April in the Gregorian calendar (15th February in the Lunar calendar).

While not a major festival, Thanh Minh holds significant cultural importance, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Vietnamese people.
On this day, descendants gather to visit the graves of their ancestors, tidying and cleaning the surroundings, and offering a table of worship, hoping for the well-being and prosperity of their family.
The atmosphere in cemeteries during Thanh Minh is often lively, with even children accompanying to learn about ancestral graves, cultivating respect for ancestors, and participating in traditional rituals. Those living far from their hometowns often arrange visits to ancestral graves, not necessarily on the exact day of Thanh Minh but on any convenient day during this period.
2. Is it better to conduct Thanh Minh rituals at home or at the gravesite first?

Typically, during Thanh Minh, families prepare an offering table and perform rituals at the gravesite first.
After cleaning and refurbishing the gravesite, the one paying respects will place the Thanh Minh offerings on a communal altar for the ceremony. If there's no altar or gravesite, preparations should include a stand or platform, avoiding placement directly on the ground. The ritual begins with lighting incense, candles, and reciting the Thanh Minh ritual.
Upon completion of the ceremony, the family waits for the incense to burn about 2/3, then performs the closing ritual, turning offerings into gold, seeking blessings, and everyone returns home to conduct household rituals for deities and ancestors.
