Despite previous rumors suggesting Apple supports gestures on iOS 11 for easier access to the home screen and multitasking interface, it seems Apple is considering a change on the iPhone 8 by using the Power button to activate Siri.
Up until now, triggering Siri involved pressing the Home button. However, starting with the iPhone 8, users can achieve this by pressing and holding the Power button.
Developer Guilherme Rambo explained on Twitter that he has 'discovered a gesture to call Siri by holding the Power button.' However, it remains unclear when this option will be activated on the iPhone 8 and other new iPhone devices.
Extended Power button
Without a shadow of a doubt, although you can use voice commands (Hey Siri) to activate Siri, Apple evidently wants to provide an alternative solution when this option is not available. Users can now utilize the Power button to summon Siri.
This is not the first time Apple has added 'advanced' functionality to the Power button. According to previous rumors, Apple has considered integrating Touch ID into the Power button, similar to what Sony did with the Xperia XZ Premium.
While these approaches might indeed be useful when the Home button no longer 'exists,' it's worth noting that the Power button will become 'thicker' to accommodate the fingerprint sensor integration. However, there is no evidence on the iPhone 8 suggesting that the Power button will be 'larger.' Assigning too many functions to the power button may lead to issues, so we still need to wait to fully understand the actual functionalities of the Power button on the iPhone 8.
