Is Tesla Losing Its Electric Car Throne?

BYD, a company based in Shenzhen, China, and backed by Warren Buffett, has outsold Tesla in electric vehicles in the first six months of this year. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that BYD has sold the most battery electric vehicles. BYD has sold 641,000 'new energy' vehicles in the first half of 2022, the company said on Sunday, nearly a 315% increase from the same period last year. In June, BYD sold 134,036 new energy vehicles, a 162.7% year-on-year increase.

Meanwhile, Tesla has delivered nearly 565,000 vehicles in the first half of this year. In Q2, Tesla delivered 254,695 vehicles, an 18% decrease from the 310,048 units in Q1, but June marked the highest monthly vehicle production in Tesla's history.

The key here lies in the terminology BYD employs — New Energy Vehicles (NEV). In China, this term encompasses both hybrid vehicles with internal combustion engines and battery-powered vehicles rechargeable from an external power source. BYD sells both hybrids and purely electric vehicles; whereas Tesla only sells battery-powered cars.

BYD has sold 314,638 hybrid vehicles in the first six months of the year, marking a 454% increase from the first half of 2021, and 323,519 battery electric vehicles, a 246% increase from the same period last year; meanwhile, Tesla has sold 564,753. Tesla still leads the pack in pure electric vehicles, but BYD's growth rate is threatening Tesla's dominance.
