Is the front camera of the iPhone 14 more than 3 times expensive compared to the iPhone 13?

According to a report from ET News of South Korea, the iPhone 14 will feature a 'premium' front camera, which is more expensive and equipped with autofocus capability. And this component will be manufactured partially in South Korea for the first time.

Apple is said to have excluded a Chinese candidate to opt for LG Innotek, a South Korean company, as the supplier for the front camera of iPhone 14 – alongside Sharp from Japan. This change is attributed to Apple reclassifying the front camera as a 'premium' component, raising concerns about the quality from Chinese suppliers. The new front camera is reportedly priced nearly three times higher than previous iPhone camera units.

This report aligns with previous rumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, suggesting that the front camera of the iPhone 14 will, for the first time, feature autofocus capability. Specifically, the front camera across all four models of the iPhone 14 will be upgraded with autofocus capability and a wider f/1.9 aperture.

A wider aperture will allow more light to pass through the lens, leading to enhanced image quality. Kuo suggests that these upgrades could result in better depth-of-field effects for photos and videos in Portrait mode, while autofocus will improve focusing abilities during FaceTime and Zoom calls. Currently, the front camera on all iPhone 13 models has a fixed focal length and a smaller f/2.2 aperture.

LG Innotek is currently believed to be preparing to mass-produce batches of the front camera units for the iPhone 14 before the device is officially released in September.
