Sumo mom shares with Vietnamese mothers the method she learned in Japan that almost eliminates postpartum belly bloating and the need to find expensive ways to lose postpartum belly fat.
Pasgo is pleased to share the experience of Sumo mom – the owner of Mira chan’s Kitchen Blog. Sumo mom has lived in Japan for many years and also gave birth there, so she has a lot of experience in Japanese-style child-rearing. Let's find out why Japanese mothers never have bloated bellies, so they don't need to reduce postpartum belly fat as much as Vietnamese mothers.
Postpartum belly bloating is both aesthetically displeasing and causes back pain because the stomach protrudes forward, causing the body to lean forward, resulting in back pain.

BMI index
During pregnancy, Japanese women gain very little weight compared to Vietnamese mothers, only increasing by 8 to 10kg. To avoid postpartum belly bloating, expectant mothers are very meticulous about controlling their weight according to the BMI index.
Calculating BMI using the formula:
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m) ÷ Height (m)
- If BMI is below 18.5, it's slightly underweight, you should gain an additional 9 to 12kg during pregnancy
- If BMI is from 18.5 to below 25, it's considered normal, you should gain 7 to 12kg during pregnancy.
- If BMI is 25 or above, it's considered slightly overweight, you should gain around 5kg during pregnancy. A 5kg increase ensures good fetal development without the risk of stunted growth.
Therefore, the BMI considered normal is between 18.5 to 25. In Japan, Japanese mothers typically gain 8kg, which is the standard. Like Sumo mom who gained a bit more at 10kg, but still gave birth to a baby weighing 3.4kg, and by the 6th month, the baby weighed 10kg.
