Venture into the Colorful Tet Floating Markets
The Mekong Delta, a land of rivers and waterways, where the lives of its people are deeply intertwined with the water. All trading activities occur on the river, known as floating markets. The Tet floating markets are regarded as one of the cultural gems of the region.

What could be more blissful than drifting on a sampan amidst the bustling morning market on the river, enjoying the fresh air filled with the scent of fruits and the waters of the Mekong.

If on regular days, the market simply passes by familiar items such as vegetables and essentials, when Tet arrives and spring approaches, the entire river is adorned with vibrant and fresh images of various flowers, candied fruits, and pickled vegetables for the impending Tet celebration. As Tet approaches, prices of goods at the floating market also increase slightly. Especially for vegetables, fruits, and flowers used for household decorations. However, prices at the floating market remain lower than those at land-based markets.

Distinct from other days of the year, on Tet day, the markets usually gather earlier, around 3 a.m., with the sounds of trade and chatter filling the air. Starting from the beginning of the lunar month of Chạp, flower vendors have already chosen their spots at the docks to set up shop. Other flower boats gradually join, forming a vibrant flower market along a stretch of the river. What's special about this unique floating market is the very short Tet holiday break.

An undeniable highlight of the Tet season for boat vendors are the bamboo poles planted on the boats, serving as signs to help customers identify what's being sold. However, for the flower boats of the Mekong Delta's floating markets, this isn't necessary. The vivid colors of flowers such as apricot blossoms, white daisies, and marigolds, bringing the unique spring spirit of the Mekong Delta, are enough to attract shoppers.
