Traveling to India - Detailed Guide for eVisa Application
India, a densely populated country ranking among the top in the world, is situated in South Asia and does not belong to the group of visa-free countries for Vietnamese citizens. If you intend to travel to this country, you must obtain a visa for entry.
To obtain a visa for India, you can either apply for an eVisa (electronic visa) or directly at the Indian Embassy in Vietnam. For tourist visas, it is advisable to apply for an eVisa as it is the most convenient and easiest option. Here are the latest updates on guidelines for obtaining an eVisa for traveling to India.
Requirements for Indian eVisa Application
- You must be a citizen of one of the 165 eligible countries to apply for an Indian visa.
- Your purpose of entry must be tourism, business, or medical.
- Your passport must have at least 6 months validity from the date of entry and at least 2 blank pages.
- The information provided in the visa application must match exactly with the information on the passport.
- Entry is only permitted at designated Immigration Check Posts (ICPs), including 29 airports and 5 seaports. Refer to the list of authorized ICPs HERE.
There are 3 types of Indian tourist visas
30-Day Tourist Visa - This type of visa allows you to stay for 30 days from the date of entry and permits dual entry during the validity period.
1-Year Tourist Visa - This visa type allows multiple entries during its validity period with a maximum continuous stay of 90 days. The visa is valid for 365 days from the date of issuance.
5-Year Tourist Visa - This visa type is valid for 5 years and permits multiple entries during this time. Similar to the '1-Year Tourist Visa', this visa allows a maximum continuous stay of 90 days. For citizens of the USA, UK, Canada, and Japan, the maximum continuous stay is 180 days.
Documents Required
- One passport-sized photo: jpg format, minimum file size of 10 KB - maximum of 1 MB. Minimum dimensions of 350 x 350 pixels. The background should be white, taken close to the application date. Your visa may be refused if the photo is unclear. Resize your photo HERE.
- One photograph or scan of a passport valid for at least 6 months, in pdf format. Minimum file size is 10 KB, maximum is 300 KB. The uploaded passport image must contain personal information such as name, date of birth, nationality, expiry date, etc. The information from the passport image must match the details provided.
- Pay attention to the image size and format, ensuring it's in PDF format to avoid visa rejection due to unclear or incorrect format. Convert image format from JPG to PDF HERE.

Submit Documents Online
Once your documents are ready, visit the Indian government website HERE, select “Apply here for e-visa” to fill in the electronic visa application. All information must be provided in English. Refer to the sample electronic visa application form HERE.
Pay Visa Fee
After completing the online form and submission, you'll receive a code. Print this code and take it to designated banks specified by the Embassy to pay the visa fee. This includes the visa issuance fee, visa processing fee, or additional fees in certain cases.
Note: Visa issuance fee is non-refundable in all cases, regardless of visa approval; Any discrepancies in information will require an additional fee for reapplication.
e-Tourist Visa 30 days (April to June): $10 USD
e-Tourist Visa 30 days (July to March): $25 USD
e-Tourist Visa 1 year: $40 USD
e-Tourist Visa 5 years: $80 USD
Visa processing fee for e-Tourist Visa to India: $35 USD
Receive e-Visa Outcome
Upon successful fee payment, you'll receive confirmation on the website. Remember to check your email within the next 72 hours for approval notification from the Embassy. Additionally, you can use the confirmation code in the notification to check your e-Visa status.
Traveling to India Guidelines
- Ensure you carry a copy of your online visa (ETV) when traveling.
- Online tourist visa (ETV) can only be applied for twice a year, cannot be extended, transferred, and is not valid for visiting restricted areas. The visa allows single entry, if you need to enter more than twice, you must visit the Embassy.
- The maximum advance application period for tourist visas is 30 days, with a minimum of 4 days.
- Identification characteristics of the applicant must be checked upon arrival in India.
