Kẻ Gỗ Lake – A Historical Marvel Amidst Nature in Hà Tĩnh

Kẻ Gỗ Lake, located in Cẩm Mỹ commune, Cẩm Xuyên district, Hà Tĩnh province, is a landmark in the famous song “Người đi xây hồ Kẻ Gỗ” (The one who went to build Kẻ Gỗ Lake) by composer Nguyễn Văn Tý. Just under 20 km from the city center, this grand irrigation project was initiated and completed in a short three years, from 1976 to 1979.

The initial plan for Kẻ Gỗ Lake was to complete it in 10 years, then shortened to 6 years, and finally accomplished in 3 years. To meet the deadline, the authorities had to bring heavy machinery weighing thirty to forty tons to the construction site; build 30,000 square meters of housing for workers; mobilize ten thousand cubic meters of stone in the first quarter of 1976 to support the construction.

During those years, thousands of people gathered on the barren land of Cẩm Xuyên district to collectively “break rocks and dig stones” to construct the most magnificent irrigation project at that time. Regularly, there were 10,000 members of the irrigation team on-site, with tens of thousands of people mobilized suddenly from cooperatives, neighborhoods, agencies, factories, schools, the military, etc. Each youth had to contribute at least 30 days of labor to serve the project in a year.

Kẻ Gỗ Lake is now a part of the Kẻ Gỗ Nature Reserve, holding a water capacity of 350 million m3, serving irrigation for nearly 17,000 hectares of rice and vegetables for local farmers. The water from the lake, through main channels stretching 250 km, irrigates over 21,000 hectares of cultivated land in Cẩm Xuyên, Thạch Hà districts, and Hà Tĩnh city, contributing to flood prevention and erosion control in the lower region.

Touring Kẻ Gỗ Lake brings new experiences to visitors as they immerse themselves in the fresh, tranquil nature while enjoying the picturesque landscapes of the Hà Tĩnh mountainous region. During holidays or weekends, the lake attracts a large number of tourists. You can choose to take a simple boat ride to explore the beautiful lake, with its calm and clear water. Besides boating on the lake, visitors shouldn't miss the chance to check-in at the overpass bridge.

The overpass bridge on Kẻ Gỗ Lake is approximately 132 meters long and forms a C shape. Standing on the overpass, tourists can't help but be amazed by the peaceful beauty of this place. Particularly, when visiting Kẻ Gỗ Lake, you can stop by, offer incense, and admire the scenery at the temple dedicated to the late General Secretary Lê Duẩn. This is a symbolic monument representing the sacred feelings and gratitude of the people of Hà Tĩnh towards the late General Secretary.
