Every year-end, the remarkable Korean Lantern Festival takes place, captivating the attention of locals and millions of tourists worldwide.
Korean Lantern Festival Illuminates Year-End Celebrations
When exploring South Korea at year-end, visitors will be dazzled and surprised by the sparkling lanterns adorning the streets during the Korean Lantern Festival.

The Korean Lantern Festival, initiated in 2009, has undergone nearly a decade of evolution, attracting approximately 3 million visitors annually. The festival has become an iconic event in Seoul, fostering tourism and cultural-artistic exchanges both domestically and internationally.

During the festival days, the Cheonggyecheon Stream is illuminated by the dazzling brilliance of hundreds of giant lanterns, featuring various colors and shapes. Creativity knows no bounds, from palaces, mythical creatures, animals to animated characters. Each lantern design, whether simple or intricate, carries a story crafted by the artists.
There are numerous activities for visitors to experience during the festival, such as releasing sky lanterns, participating in lantern parades, learning the art of making lanterns, and floating lanterns on the river.

The theme for 2021 is “Forest of Healing, the Color of Seoul,” possibly inspired by tranquility after turbulent times and hopes for a brighter future. In addition to domestic artworks, many countries also participate in exhibiting lantern pieces at the festival.
The Korean Lantern Festival in 2021 presented 10 artworks showcased online using augmented reality (AR) technology. Visitors can view these pieces on the official festival website.

Traditionally held at Cheonggyecheon Stream, this year, the festival will take place at Gwanghwamun Square. The official festival dates, announced on the website, are from December 16 to 31.
