In Lair of the Clockwork God, each main character represents an entirely different game genre. This means you can switch between the 2 characters on your journey. Ben is a quirky adventure enthusiast in the old-school style. His mind is stuck in 1995. Ben enjoys collecting (stealing) everything and combining them in his inventory.

As for Dan, he believes he won't earn a penny in his adventures anymore. From now on, he's determined to become a free-spirited, independent Platformer enthusiast. Dan enjoys sprinting at high speeds and convinces himself that pushing crates around somehow signifies intelligence.
Each character possesses unique skills and action styles: Ben searches for items, combines them in the inventory to create better ones for Dan, who can access new areas and even unlock more items for Ben.
All apocalyptic events occurred simultaneously (global nuclear war, massive robot invasions, cornfield-swarming sword-wielding bees, Wi-Fi becoming unreliable, you get the idea). While hiding disastrously in a bunker, our heroes stumble upon a mysterious old computer with a large face, eager to teach them about the core emotions of humanity to save Earth from doom.

As you can see, like any other Indie game, the purpose of Lair of the Clockwork God is to make you feel a range of inexplicable emotions. So, as you play various themed levels around concepts like Joy, Fear, and Sadness, the computer will absorb those notions, evolving more 'human' with the hope it'll find enough empathy in its tiny metal circuits to help save the planet.
