1. What should you do when you lose your passport?
- According to the 2019 Vietnamese Immigration and Emigration Law, in case of passport loss, individuals must report the loss to the competent authorities.
+ For diplomatic or official passports: notify the loss of passport in writing to the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the authorized agency delegated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Vietnamese representative office abroad.
+ For ordinary passports: Submit a form or directly submit a lost passport report to the immigration authorities or police within 48 hours from the time of discovering the lost passport.
- Subsequently, the competent authority will confirm the passport loss and invalidate the lost passport.
2. Penalty for passport loss
Based on Point a, Clause 2, Article 18 of Decree 144/2021/ND-CP:
Penalties are imposed for failing to report passport loss to the competent authority: Fines range from 500,000 to 2,000,000 Vietnamese dong.
3. Replacing a lost passport
When a passport is lost, citizens applying for a replacement passport need to prepare the following documents:
- 01 passport application form;
- 02 recent photos sized 4 x 6 cm, facing forward, without wearing colored glasses, with a white background.
- Proof of passport loss report.
For children under 14 years old:
- The passport application form must be confirmed and stamped by the local police where the child resides or temporarily resides;
- If applying for a separate passport, submit:
+ 01 copy of the birth certificate;
+ 02 photos sized 4cm x 6cm.
+ Declaration form filled and signed by parents/adoptive parents/guardians (with documents proving the relationship such as household registration book, adoption decision, or guardian appointment decision).
