(Homeland) - HLE is currently not in a stable state, and according to many opinions, their personnel is the issue.
Traditionally considered one of LCK's powerhouses, Hanwha Life Esports surprised many by forgoing the entire 2022 season without acquiring any notable talent. Notably, they had previously parted ways with key players such as Chovy and Deft. However, heading into the 2023 season, HLE made a strong comeback with a star-studded lineup, boasting 3 former World Championship finalists including Kingen, Zeka, and Viper.

But even after the conclusion of the Spring 2023 split, HLE struggled to find their footing in the quest for titles. In fact, they finished a disappointing 5th in the Spring 2023 split, narrowly avoiding losing their spot in the direct qualification round. Nonetheless, they were defeated by Gen.G - the eventual champions, resulting in a 4th place finish for HLE in the Spring 2023 split.
According to many fans, HLE's performance in the Spring Split, winning 3 out of 5 matches played, is largely due to flawed transfer policies, particularly concerning Kingen's position. LCK fans argue that Kingen's champion pool is severely limited, and the reality has shown that without Aatrox or more recently K'Sante, Kingen struggles to dominate any Top Laner, except those significantly weaker.

Of course, this viewpoint has sparked considerable debate. However, many agree that if Zeka's recruitment clause didn't include Kingen, HLE might have recruited a better Top Laner. In fact, if no other options were available, HLE could have retained DuDu. He currently plays for KDF after leaving HLE in the final transfer window of the 2022 season.

Kingen's declining performance is nothing unfamiliar, except for the 2022 Worlds period. Otherwise, Kingen has never been regarded as a reliable Top Laner. Perhaps, if the reigning champions of the 2022 Worlds continue to underperform, HLE will seek a replacement after this season concludes.
