Screenshots of the redesigned Gmail layout have been discovered, providing a glimpse into the features coming to the service's Android and web apps, primarily catering to enterprise customers. Some images were found by Twitter user Tahin Rahman (via 9to5Google) in slides presented at the virtual Google Cloud Next '20 event. While the 9-week event kicked off yesterday, the Productivity & Collaboration event will be held on July 21. These slides could be part of those events.

Leaked images reveal 4 tabs in the Gmail app on Android for business - Mail, Chat, Rooms, and Meet located at the bottom of the screen right after logging into Gmail. The search giant integrated Meet with Gmail on the web earlier this year and on the app for Android and iOS in July. The Chat and Room tabs bring additional collaboration capabilities, potentially turning Gmail into a unified communication hub. The Chat tab allows users to view personal and group conversations in the app, while also helping users check missed conversations similar to in Gmail. The Rooms tab allows you to keep a tab on projects and other group collaboration activities, offering functionality similar to some competing collaboration platforms like Slack.
For changes on the web, the company calls it the 'Your new workplace - right in Gmail'. Notable enhancements will include the introduction of Rooms and Chat in the service. Users will be able to work on shared projects with file exchange, task assignment, and more through Rooms. This feature also integrates with Google Docs for 'margin document editing' and supports Picture-in-Picture feature for Meet calls.
Google is rumored to be developing an integrated messaging app for businesses. With these changes, it seems that those efforts have finally focused on turning Gmail for G Suite into a collaboration and communication hub. It's still unclear when these features will begin rolling out to business customers and what types of controls will be provided to administrators to customize the user experience.
