Lively Khmer Dragon Boat Racing Festival in Southern Vietnam
The Khmer Boat Racing Festival takes place annually in October (Lunar calendar). It is one of the major festivals of the Khmer community in Southern Vietnam, attracting a large number of participants. Hence, the investment and preparation for the race are meticulous, particularly in Soc Trang where the festival is predominantly held, with teams participating from various provinces such as Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Ca Mau, Can Tho, An Giang, etc.

To participate in the Khmer Boat Racing, it is crucial to prepare a boat with a length of about 25 - 30m, resembling the shape of a snake. Both the front and the back of the boat (known as the steering tail) are curved upwards. The boat is decorated with colorful patterns, with an iconic animal figure at the front of each boat, which could be a tiger, elephant, lion, dragon, etc., to add emphasis to their boat.

Usually, a Khmer boat racing boat has about 24 to 27 pairs of oars along with a main helmsman, likened to the conductor of the boat team. This pivotal role is entrusted to individuals with high standing in the Khmer community and significant racing experience. The selection process for this crucial role is rigorous due to its importance.

The process of organizing the competition is quite lengthy, so all participants in this event must be healthy young men accustomed to the water environment here. The spirit of unity plays an important role, partly determining whether the dragon boat team wins or not. The more smoothly coordinated and united the teams are, the higher the winning rate.

For the Khmer people, they believe that dragon boats are sacred objects, so all activities related to dragon boats must be performed ceremoniously, such as the groundbreaking ceremony for making dragon boats, the inauguration ceremony, and the dressing ceremony for dragon boats... Each ceremony has specific regulations on offerings, rituals, as well as the placement of ceremonies, officiants, and participants.

Each dragon boat is not a personal product but a result of the collective effort of the entire team, so the result of the competition is the result of a united collective effort, and everyone deserves this result.
