Players have expressed their disappointment as the Star Guardian event lacks special gameplay features reminiscent of previous versions.
Not long ago, Riot Games released short films introducing the Star Guardian event, providing us with our first look at the main character of this event - Kai'Sa. Additionally, these introductory films also embedded numerous details about the appearance of other characters and their relationships within the Star Guardian universe. All of these elements were building up to an extremely large event, spanning multiple versions of LMHT.

However, following the update yesterday (24/6) on the PBE testing server, this event has left players feeling disappointed. The reason being that Riot Games showed laziness in event design by simply bringing back the Ascension game mode. Meanwhile, players had high expectations for a mode directly related to the event, such as utilizing Star Guardians to confront Void creatures.

Even in complaints about this issue on the Reddit forum, players feel betrayed by Riot's actions. Many other players share this view and mock Riot, suggesting they intentionally did this to make it easier for players to transition to playing RPGs in the future.
It's sad that AI battle modes will never return. For me, the Odyssey game mode remains something incredibly valuable.
Riot is pushing their players to endure boredom so they can later switch to playing easier RPGs.
Honestly, Odyssey is the greatest event. You get to play an extremely challenging game mode and even receive free bonus skins.

In reality, Riot Games once had an article on their homepage stating they wouldn't create special game modes anymore because they didn't bring in enough profit. Moreover, Riot also provided data showing many players would abandon these special modes after just 1-2 tries. Therefore, Riot believes designing them isn't worth the time and effort.
However, for a highly anticipated event like Star Guardian, Riot's cookie-cutter approach of only reopening Ascension is hardly acceptable. Remember that League of Legends players are already familiar with this game's mechanics, so learning about event storylines through dialogue segments like the Spirit Blossom event isn't sufficient. It's unfortunate that Riot doesn't think so, and they face criticism from League of Legends players for their event's shortcomings.
