The upcoming Lunar New Year holiday will last for seven days, from January 20th to 26th, 2023 (from the 29th day of the Lunar December, Year of the Tiger, to the end of the 5th day of the Lunar January, Year of the Cat).
On December 1st, Deputy Prime Minister Vo Duc Dam approved the seven-day Lunar New Year holiday plan as proposed by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.
Specifically, civil servants will have the Lunar New Year holiday from Friday, January 20, 2023, to Thursday, January 26, 2023 – from the 29th day of the Lunar December in the Year of the Tiger to the end of the 5th day of the Lunar January in the Year of the Cat, returning to work on the 6th day of the Lunar January (January 27, 2023).

In late August, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs presented two options for the Lunar New Year holiday: 7 days and 9 days, seeking opinions from 16 ministries and relevant agencies.
After two months of feedback, most units chose the 7-day option, with two ministries opting for a 9-day break (from Saturday, January 21, 2023, to Sunday, January 29, 2023, i.e., from the 30th day of the Lunar December in the Year of the Tiger to the end of the 8th day of the Lunar January in the Year of the Cat). The Vietnam General Confederation of Labor proposed an 8-day holiday plan (from January 19th to 26th, 2023, compensating on January 28th, 2023).
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs believes that the Prime Minister's choice of a 7-day Lunar New Year holiday is reasonable, providing a balanced period with not excessively long consecutive days off. This includes 2 official days off before Tet, 3 days after Tet, and an additional 2 days at the weekend, facilitating travel and Tet shopping for the public.
The Lunar New Year holiday schedule applies to civil servants, but the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs encourages businesses to apply it to workers and notify them at least 30 days in advance.
How many days off for New Year's Day 2023?
As January 1, 2023, falls on a Sunday, workers will have a compensatory day off on the next working day. If workers have a Saturday off, the New Year's Day 2023 holiday will extend for 3 consecutive days, from December 31, 2022, to January 2, 2023.

Therefore, the time between the New Year's Day and the Tet Lunar New Year 2023 holidays is just three weeks apart.
National Day 2023 Holiday Schedule
For the National Day holiday in 2023, the government has approved a plan for a 4-day extended break. Specifically, civil servants will have a holiday from Friday, September 1st, to the end of Monday, September 4th, 2023.
