Lũng Cú, a highland commune perched atop Dong Van Plateau, the northernmost region of Vietnam. Located 24km from the center of Dong Van town, Lũng Cú is renowned for its impressive natural landscapes and the rich cultural diversity of its highland ethnic groups.
The name 'Lũng Cú' has various interpretations, all related to the mythical creature 'Dragon.' Some suggest the correct name might be 'Long Cổ' (a drum in the shape of a dragon) or 'Long Cư' (where the dragon resides). An intriguing hypothesis proposes that 'Lũng Cú' could be translated as 'Dragon Valley.' According to Cantonese pronunciation, 'Lũng' means Dragon, and 'Cú' means Valley in Mandarin. Situated amidst three sides bordering China and to the south adjacent to Ma Le commune, Lũng Cú is home to various ethnic minorities like H'mong, Lô Lô, Tày, and Pu Péo. Located atop Lũng Cú (Dragon Mountain's peak), belonging to Lũng Cú commune, Dong Van district, Ha Giang province. Standing at an approximate height of 1,470 meters, it is the highest point in the northernmost region of the country. History of Lũng Cú Flagpole in Hà Giang
The flagpole in Lũng Cú is a sacred symbol marking our country's steadfast sovereignty through generations.
According to historical records, when Lý Thường Kiệt guarded the frontier at Lũng Cú, he planted a flag made of sassafras leaves on the Dragon Mountain's peak to assert the country's sovereignty. The flagpole was initially crafted from sassafras wood until its reconstruction in 1887. Subsequent renovations occurred in 1992, 2000, and 2002. By 2002, the flagpole stood at around 20m, with a hexagonal-shaped base adorned with six Dong Son drum motifs. At the top, the national flag of Vietnam was hoisted. The flag, measuring 9m by 6m, was affixed to a 9m pole, symbolizing the 54 ethnic groups living harmoniously in the S-shaped land.
The flagpole's most recent renovation was in 2010, maintaining its structure to date. The current flagpole stands at a height of 33.15m, reconstructed in an octagonal shape similar to Hanoi's flagpole. The base is adorned with green stone reliefs featuring meaningful motifs. The base is adorned with eight reliefs depicting the changes in our country throughout various periods, intertwined with images of people and the culture of Hà Giang's ethnic groups.

Lũng Cú is a mountainous district 500km from Hanoi and 200km from the center of Hà Giang city.
