Illustrative imageEarly benchmark results for the new MacBook Air featuring the M2 chip have emerged, providing a deeper insight into the performance of this laptop. The MacBook Air M2 with 16 GB RAM scored a single-core of 1,899 and a multi-core of 8,965 on Geekbench 5.
These scores closely match those achieved by the MacBook Pro 13-inch with the M2 chip, confirming nearly identical performance between the laptops in synthetic tests, as seen with the M1 models.
While the M2 chip performs similarly in both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro according to Geekbench tests, the MacBook Pro may still excel in sustained usage scenarios requiring heavier workloads due to its integrated cooling fan.

The results also confirm that the MacBook Air M2 outperforms the basic Mac Pro Tower model with an Intel Xeon W 8-core processor despite being priced nearly $5,000 lower. While not a direct comparison between 'Apples' and 'Apples', it's still evidence of the impressive performance of Apple silicon chips in more affordable Macs.
It remains to be seen whether the base model MacBook Air M2 with 256 GB SSD is equipped with a single NAND storage chip. Last month, it was discovered that the base model MacBook Pro on Geekbench 5 had significantly slower SSD speeds compared to equivalent M1 models due to having only a single 256 GB SSD instead of two 128 GB SSDs.
Due to swap memory, slower SSD speeds can sometimes impact the overall system performance.
