Mark Zuckerberg seems uninterested in Apple's introduction of Vision Pro, a device that directly competes with Meta Quest.
During a company-wide meeting with Meta employees, the CEO stated that Apple's device does not bring any significant technological breakthroughs compared to what Meta has 'already explored,' and Apple's vision for how people use Vision Pro is not aligned with Mark's goals. He also emphasized that Meta's upcoming Quest 3 will be much cheaper, priced at just $499 compared to Vision Pro's $3,499, which clearly allows Meta to reach a broader user base.
Based on my initial observations, I don't believe there's any miraculous solution that they (Apple) have to overcome the physical limitations our teams haven't explored and considered. They've opted for a high-resolution screen and combined it with all the technologies to function. This results in it being priced seven times higher and requiring a lot of power, to the extent that you need a separate battery and connection cable to use it. They've made a trade-off in design, and it may make sense in the cases they're targeting.” - Mark stated.
'I believe what they've just introduced is a specific testament to the difference in values and vision between our company and theirs,' Zuckerberg expressed to all employees at the company's headquarters in Menlo Park during the first all-hands meeting since 2020. Zuckerberg stated that Quest emphasizes 'human interaction in new ways and a closer sense of intimacy,' while also aiming to 'keep users active and engaged.' Once again, he reaffirmed that Quest is moving in the right direction and achieving certain success, as the company has sold 10 million units to date.
Mark emphasizes that Apple's device is primarily designed for 'introverted' individuals, who enjoy consuming content alone on the sofa. This is clearly evident in the footage shown at Apple's unveiling event. They consistently show scenes of someone sitting on the sofa using Vision Pro, rather than showing users in motion or engaging in interactive gaming.Currently, Mark Zuckerberg may be breathing a sigh of relief with the arguments he's put forth, but before Apple's event, Meta also had its concerns. Evidence of this is the company announcing the third version of Meta Quest just a few days before Vision Pro's launch, even though this headset won't be available until June. For years, Meta has been striving to lead in the virtual reality field, pouring tons of money into devices and platforms, sometimes even causing investors to worry. Clearly, Apple launching a product like this will make them a significant contender with Meta. And being a rival to Apple is no easy feat.
Meta has achieved initial success in the virtual reality gaming and virtual sports activities sectors. However, they've faced difficulties trying to access the higher-end market, which is exactly the segment Apple is targeting. Last year, they introduced Quest Pro, a very high-end virtual reality headset, which was considered unsuccessful.
