Marvel and Sony believe Spider-Man: No Way Home is capable of competing for the Oscar for Best Picture

It's only fair to dub No Way Home, the third standalone film featuring Tom Holland's 'web-slinger,' a resounding financial success. On its opening day alone, the movie grossed $260 million in the US market, surpassing even the $258 million earnings of Avengers: Endgame. Yet, the financial success of No Way Home doesn't seem to satisfy Marvel and Sony entirely. It seems they're aiming for an Oscar as well.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman Tom Rothman argued that the blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home deserves a chance to compete in the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards, much like they did with Black Panther before.

Rothman asserts that No Way Home isn't just a box office hit, but also a cinematic masterpiece worthy of recognition at film awards. Meanwhile, Feige goes even further, comparing No Way Home to… The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, suggesting it serves the purpose of 'recalling the Homecoming trilogy, as well as the five times Spider-Man has graced the silver screen in the past.'

At the beginning of December, Kevin Feige expressed that the Academy has biases toward certain genres of cinema, suggesting that Marvel Studios is 'constantly disadvantaged' due to the presence of the Marvel logo in their films, and because of the biases critics impose on different film genres. This sentiment was echoed by both Tom Rothman and film producer Amy Pascal. Pascal also pointed out that all cinematic works have value, including those featuring peculiarly dressed mutants battling it out. Additionally, she anticipates that the generation of critics who grew up with the older Spider-Man films will also give No Way Home the recognition it deserves.

Currently, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are in the initial phase of campaigning No Way Home for an Oscar, with their 'For Your Consideration' campaign, allowing awards jurors to screen the film from the comfort of their homes via their streaming accounts, an experience not everyone gets. Previously, Marvel also rolled out a similar 'For Your Consideration' campaign for Avengers: Endgame, but ultimately the film only received one nomination for Best Visual Effects (and was later defeated by Sam Mendes' 1917).

This year, Eternals director Chloé Zhao and her team clinched three Oscars with Nomadland, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Frances McDormand. This elevates Eternals as a strong contender, provided it doesn't lose its appeal for unwarranted reasons. Conversely, No Way Home is excelling in its role as a cash cow for both Sony and Marvel Studios.

The question posed at the end of the article is whether superhero action films deserve to compete for Oscars. Is there bias among critics, who often regard 'art-house' films like last year's Nomadland as inherently more valuable than entertaining action flicks? Let's discuss.
