The American newspaper Chicago Tribune reveals the extraordinary natural ice wonders within the caves of the Apostle Islands, situated in the northern part of Wisconsin, United States, starting to welcome visitors from February 28th.
Marvels of Ice Caves in the Apostle Islands

The ice caves belong to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore – a place characterized by geological formations of vivid red, orange, or deep golden hues. During winter, ice crystals blanket these sandstone formations, creating a unique natural spectacle.
Within the ice caves, frozen water droplets congeal to form ice columns and intricate ice snowflakes with unusual shapes.
According to USA Today, park authorities emphasize that accessing the ice viewing spots is far from easy. Visitors must trek at least 1.6km across the frozen Lake Superior to reach the location, equipped with snowshoes for safety, as the icy lake surface is as slippery as a hockey rink. Additionally, the ice formations inside the caves are delicate and brittle, akin to glass.
During the winter season last year, approximately 138,000 tourists visited the park's ice caves, with tours lasting for 10 weeks, depending on the pace of ice melting due to weather conditions.
