M.A.S.H represents mansion, apartment, shack, and house. This acronym not only names the game but also plays a vital role in predicting your future. Position “MASH” at the top-center of your page, much like a title. You can even organize your game using a tic-tac-toe grid, drawing a large '#' symbol and placing “MASH” in the top-center section.
Select your categories.
Determine the aspects you want the game to predict, such as your future spouse or career. In M.A.S.H, the goal is to unveil your “future,” and the chosen categories will encompass different facets of your life. Beneath “MASH,” list the specific details you desire for your story or prediction. While you can include as many categories as you wish, we recommend a minimum of 4. Here are some common M.A.S.H categories to consider:
- Partner or future spouse
- Occupation
- Income
- Number of children
- Vehicle
- Residential location
- Pets
- If using a # grid, assign each section a category, leaving the middle space empty.
- The greater the number of categories, the more detailed and expansive your story or future will become.
Provide 4 options for each category.
Your 'options' represent all potential outcomes for each category. Ensure you list a minimum of 4 options or scenarios for each category. These can range from humorous to practical or even dreadful! One of these options will become a part of your future, although you won’t have control over which one. The choices you jot down are entirely up to you or a friend. It's more thrilling and unpredictable when you have a mix of positive and negative options in each category.
- For instance, under “People to Marry,” you might list “Harry, Niall, Zayn, and Liam.” For 'Job,' options could include 'Teacher, Astronaut, Pop Star, and Zookeeper.'
- If you're playing with a friend, they can choose your options for you, or you can split the choices. This can add suspense, especially if they opt for amusing or unfavorable choices while you select ideal ones. For example, you might pick 'dog and bunny' for pets, while they choose 'donkey and worm' for the remaining 2 options.
Determine your magic number.
Your magic number is crucial for randomly selecting your final outcomes. The method of obtaining this number is entirely flexible. However, ensure you pick a number between 3 and 10 for efficiency. Here are some popular ways to determine your magic number:
- Create a spiral on the page or in the center of the # grid until a friend says stop. Your magic number is the number of rings in your spiral.
- Close your eyes and mark the page with dots until a friend instructs you to stop. The number of dots represents your magic number.
- Select your favorite or lucky number as your magic number.
- Ask a friend to select a number between 3 and 10 for you.
- Roll one or more dice.
Eliminate options until only 1 remains for each category.
Use your magic number to count through options and uncover your future. Begin at the “M” in “MASH” and proceed clockwise through the categories. Each option corresponds to a number. The option you land on when you reach your magic number is then eliminated, so mark it off. Continue counting and crossing out options until only 1 option remains in each category.
- Suppose your magic number is 8. You would start at “M” and count “A” as 1, “S” as 2, “H” as 3, and so on, crossing out the option in the 8th position.
- Remember to skip over the options that have been crossed out when counting.
