Google has recently rolled out a fresh version of Gmail, packed with a multitude of interface overhauls and novel features catering to both Windows and mobile platforms, aimed at enriching user experience. One standout addition is the Confidential Mode, which prioritizes safeguarding user privacy.
With this mode, Gmail allows users to set an expiration date for a specific email, meaning that after a designated period that you set, the email will automatically be erased from both your and the recipient's accounts. So, how can you make the most out of it? Let's dive into the article below!
Activating Confidential Mode: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Switch to the New Gmail Interface
- Click on the gear icon (Settings), and you'll see the option 'Try the new Gmail' at the top of the drop-down menu. Click on it and wait a few seconds for your inbox to refresh. During the upgrade process, you can explore the 'Welcome to Gmail' section, which is quite interesting.

Step 2: Click on the Confidential Mode icon in the composer
- Open a new email composer. You'll notice an icon of a padlock and a clock on the right side of the toolbar. If you see this icon, it means you're in Confidential mode.

Using Confidential Mode

- Step 1: Open the Gmail composing window as usual.
- Step 3: After composing your email, click on the Confidential mode icon at the bottom of the composing window. A new window with various options will appear. Emails sent in this mode will prevent recipients from forwarding, copying, or printing the content.
- Step 4: Set a password to enhance email security.
