Many people share various ways to save battery, some are effective, some are not. In this article, we compile methods recommended by technicians and reputable websites for effectively using laptop batteries.
Effective Strategies for Maximizing Laptop Battery Usage
1. First Time Charging
Upon purchasing a new laptop, it's essential to deplete the battery completely before initiating the first charge. Following this, charge the battery fully for the initial three cycles. The first charge should ideally last 3-4 hours continuously. Once the battery is depleted for the first time, repeat the process for the second and third cycles, also charging for 3-4 hours continuously each time.
2. Efficient Battery Management
Navigate to the Control PanelPower Options section.
It's advisable to set your laptop to Power Saver mode, with the screen brightness at 40%, to prevent excessive strain on your eyes. If left unused, the screen will turn off after 2 minutes, and the laptop will enter Sleep mode after 10 minutes.
Additionally, you can customize your power settings by clicking on Change plan settings. You can set the screen to turn off (1) (Turn off the display) after 1 minute, and enter Sleep mode(2) after 5 minutes. Adjust the brightness to your preference under (3) (Adjust plan brightness). Once done, click on Save changes(4).
3. Keeping the Battery Cool
While using your laptop, it's common for people to place it on their laps or on soft surfaces like pillows or blankets. This can hinder heat dissipation from the chip, leading to overheating, including the battery. This can accelerate battery depletion and potentially damage it over time.
4. Regularly Clean Contact Points
The laptop battery is connected to the device via copper contact points. If these points are not cleaned regularly, dust and dirt can accumulate, leading to poor contact and increased power consumption, risking damage to both the device and the battery. Use a cloth dampened with alcohol to clean the points, then allow them to dry before reinserting the battery.
5. Avoid Allowing Battery Depletion Often
During usage, many people overlook the battery level, allowing it to deplete completely before recharging. Continuously doing this can lead to battery damage. It's best to recharge when the battery level reaches around 10%-20%.
6. Adjusting Battery Levels
After a period of use, there may be instances where the battery management circuit does not accurately detect the battery capacity or the battery swells. Therefore, every 2 months, users should allow the battery to reach around 7%-10% capacity before charging it fully for approximately 3-4 hours.
Here, we have compiled the most effective ways to use your laptop battery, helping to prolong its lifespan and increase usage time.
