At the Japan Mobility Show 2023, Mazda unveiled a concept car to illustrate the vision of a compact sports car comparable to the Mazda RX-7, but as a modern, environmentally friendly vehicle. This conceptual model is aimed at customers who favor a sleek, eye-catching sports car design, suitable for daily commuting with just the right amount of excitement while still ensuring relaxation.
Mazda Iconic SP is targeted by Mazda as an environmentally conscious vehicle while still leveraging the strong potential of the brand's renowned Wankel engine. The configuration of the car will feature a Wankel engine with 2 rotors tasked with charging the car's battery pack, which will then power the electric motor - also serving as the car's propulsion system. This model isn't entirely novel; Mazda has practically applied it on the MX-30 model with the e-Skyactiv R-EV engine responsible for charging the car's battery pack.If Mazda were to transform this system into a commercial product, the car would possess certain notable advantages: The Wankel engine with its lightweight and minimal footprint (1/3 compared to other conventional engines), low center of gravity improving handling, especially for a sports car. Mazda states it can easily achieve a 50:50 weight distribution ratio and deliver superior sports driving performance.
Mazda Iconic SP is defined as a small-sized sports car, with dimensions of Length x Width x Height at 4,180 × 1,850 × 1,150 mm respectively, and a wheelbase length of 2,590 mm. The maximum expected power output is 365 horsepower, with a vehicle weight of approximately 1,450 kg.
