In recent years, MediaTek's Dimensity series has emerged as a strong competitor to Qualcomm Snapdragon. Prior to Dimensity, MediaTek's main market share came from budget and mid-range devices featuring the Helio Series processors. Currently, Intel and TSMC are MediaTek's major partners in chip development.
MediaTek pioneers the development of its inaugural 3nm chip with TSMCDuring a recent press conference in Hsinchu, Taiwan, MediaTek made the official announcement about its new 3nm processor. This chipset is developed in collaboration with TSMC, utilizing advanced 3nm fabrication technology. Currently, TSMC and are the only companies in the world manufacturing 3nm chipsets.
MediaTek has not shared precise details about this new processor, such as its name and core configuration. However, it is speculated that the upcoming Dimensity 9400, set to be released, could be MediaTek's first processor built on the 3nm process.
As of now, MediaTek's most advanced processor is manufactured using 4nm architecture. The Dimensity 9000, MediaTek's first processor utilizing the 4nm fabrication process, was introduced in early 2022.
Dr. Cliff Hou, Senior Vice President at TSMC, states that the new 3nm technology will bring significant improvements to processors. The new architecture provides an 18% speed boost compared to the latest processors, along with a 32% reduction in power consumption, enhancing efficiency.
The transition from 4nm to 3nm also increases semiconductor density by 60%, enhancing the logic performance of processors. TSMC notes that the new 3nm technology has been under development for several years.
