A French architect unveils a design for a 900m-long manta ray-shaped vessel called “Meriens City”, dedicated to marine research.
Meriens City, resembling a graceful manta ray, accommodates a population of 7,000.
The manta ray-inspired vessel, named “Meriens City”, resembles a scene from a futuristic science fiction movie, designed to circumnavigate the globe with thousands living aboard. This model can house 7,000 individuals with numerous scientific and research facilities. French architect Jacques Rougerie explains that he designed Meriens City in the shape of a manta ray because it is the most optimal form to accommodate such a large community. The vessel will serve researchers, students wishing to explore marine life.

Upon completion, Meriens City will measure 90m in length, 500m in width, and also have the capacity to accommodate numerous small research vessels measuring 90m long. Rougerie also plans for lecture halls, classrooms, laboratories, recreational areas, and sports facilities on board. Additionally, he considers the living environment and opts for renewable ocean energy following sustainable development principles. The vessel will not generate waste. Furthermore, at the end of the manta ray’s wings, there will be hydroponic greenhouses.
